Nutrient management for stronger soils and better yields

Cornell’s Quirine Ketterings and the Nutrient Management Spear Program (NMSP) are helping New York dairy, livestock and crop farms strengthen both productivity and environmental stewardship.

At Cornell Dairy Research and Education Center (CDREC), the team is focused on turning manure into a real productivity tool, improving nitrogen recovery, reducing N₂O emissions and building healthier soils.

NMSP is using yield monitor data, remote sensing and spatial analysis to give farmers clearer insights into how their fields perform. These tools help identify yield barriers and support on farm innovation.

The goal is simple: Grow more with less and build stronger, more resilient cropping systems for the future. 🌾

Rich just returned this afternoon from the Annual FRESH event; Forest Resources Extension Sharing. A collaboration of Extension Educators from all over the state, sharing Forestry and Natural Resources programming ideas from around the state. In attendance every year since 2008 except tor Covid. Held at Cornell’s Arnot Forest in Van Etten and CCE Schuyler in Montour Falls. For questions about forests, wildlife, and other natural resources, give us a call. If we don’t know the answer we will find someone in the Cornell and CCE system who does.

Celebrating June Dairy Month in Chenango County!

A huge thank you to the Chenango County Board of Supervisors for officially proclaiming June as Dairy Month! We deeply appreciate the Board's continued support of our local dairy farm families, agri-businesses, and processing partners. Dairy is the backbone of our local culture and economy. Check out the impact our industry makes right here at home:

An Economic Powerhouse: Chenango County dairy farmers generate over $71.6 million in sales, accounting for 58% of the total value of all agricultural products sold in the county.

Global Innovation with Deep Roots: From generational family farms to global dairy innovators like Chobani based right here in the county, our regional agriculture pairs small-town dedication with massive global impact.

Save the Date! Join us this year at Chenango County Dairy Day & Open Farm Day on Saturday, July 18th at the fairgrounds in Norwich to celebrate our industry and meet our local producers!

Please join us in thanking the Board of Supervisors, raising a cold glass of milk, and supporting our incredible local dairy producers all month long! A special thank you to 4-H and FFA youth Maranda Schmidt and local dairy farmer Terry Ives for speaking on behalf of the dairy industry today.

Dairy nutrition: Feeding smarter for better results

Science that’s reshaping the dairy world! Did you know that a Cornell-developed nutrition model helps feed 70% of all dairy cows in North America? That’s thanks to Professor Mike Van Amburgh and his team, who are dedicated to understanding what cows truly need to thrive.

At Cornell Dairy Research and Education Center (CDREC), the Van Amburgh lab is helping farmers feed more precisely — boosting production, improving profitability and reducing environmental impact. Their breakthroughs in amino acid requirements, fiber digestibility and rumen biology are giving farmers tools to produce more milk fat and protein than ever before. This is what innovation on the farm looks like. 🐄💡

A research dairy built for impact: Cornell Dairy Research and Education Center (CDREC). 🐄

Located just 15 miles from Cornell’s main campus, Cornell Dairy Research and Education Center (CDREC) is a state-of-the-art, commercial-style dairy farm established in 2013. Home to 570 milking cows and 400 heifers and calves and supported by over 2,600 acres of cropland and pasture, it serves as the only university-operated dairy in the U.S. capable of large-scale, whole-farm research.

CDREC allows scientists to study dairy production, animal health, nutrition, crop systems and environmental sustainability in an integrated, real-world setting. This research helps improve milk production, animal welfare and sustainability while supporting New York’s dairy industry.
