Between answering calls and serving our community, your Occum Volunteer Fire Department members continue putting in the time to train and sharpen the skills needed when the alarm sounds.

This past Tuesday, our members focused on ground ladder operations, reviewing the different types and functions of ladders, proper carrying and deployment techniques, safe placement, and their use during structure fire operations.

Ground ladders are one of the most fundamental tools on the fireground. Whether they’re being used for rescue, access, ventilation, or providing firefighters with a secondary means of escape, being able to deploy them quickly and correctly matters.

Training like this keeps the basics sharp and gives newer members the opportunity to learn alongside our experienced firefighters.

Our members are volunteers. They have families, careers, and responsibilities outside the firehouse—but they continue showing up, answering calls, and putting in the hours to be ready for the people we serve.

We’re still here. We’re still training. And when you need us, we’ll be there.

So I have to give some props to the guy who thought it was a good idea to drive Truck 1 to the PW garage with one of the out riggers stuck out. You get a Bud Light for being A Real Men of Genius. It blew a hydraulic line at a fire alarm on Hickory spilling gallons of fluid, it ended up getting in the catch basin, had to call for a PW truck with sand to put down on the road, that's no big deal, it happens. The real fun begins when someone decides to drive it to the garage with the out rigger out and the PD had to bang on doors to get people to move their cars. I can't say for sure but on Tower 25 there is an electric back up for this kind of emergency, it's really slow but it does the job. I can't say for certain if Truck 1 has one but I would say it does, and if it does then as an operator you should know that. So they drive it from Hickory to Alms Rd off of Asylum and as they enter the road they take out a telephone poll with transformers attached to it. So most likely they have damaged that outrigger, they had to replace the pole at a cost of I think around 50k, then factor in the labor to replace the pole and transformers and the labor to fix the truck and the damage to the truck, yup the taxpayers get another huge bill. And now they get to beat on Tower 25 some more. I think there should be some people on the beach with no pay for this one. If it was the volunteers it would be on the National news. Oh and why isn't Arnold Alina posting about this?

This might actually cost us more than 50 K according to some of the comments on that post.

After clearing the room without authority, under threat of criminal trespass, the mayor gives Joe Delucia the floor. Joe Delucia did speak about the cost. He makes it sound like the expenses… legal expense and public relations that were incurred, were the bulk of the expense, but the bulk of the expense was incurred because the city closed Yantic.
