Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day ๐Ÿ’œ

The Norwood City Board of Health joins communities around the world in raising awareness about elder abuse and neglect. Every older adult deserves to live with dignity, respect, and safety.

Elder abuse can take many forms, including physical, emotional, financial, sexual abuse, and neglect. Unfortunately, millions of older adults experience abuse each year, often at the hands of someone they know and trust.

You can help make a difference by:
โœ”๏ธ Checking in on older family members, friends, and neighbors
โœ”๏ธ Learning the warning signs of abuse and neglect
โœ”๏ธ Speaking up if you suspect an older adult is being harmed
โœ”๏ธ Promoting respect, inclusion, and support for older adults in our community

Together, we can help protect the health, safety, and well-being of Norwood's older residents.

If you suspect elder abuse, report concerns to local authorities or Adult Protective Services.

This National Safety Month

Remember that safety starts at home!

If you have a natural gas range or oven, make sure to keep it clean of any grease, oil or debris to prevent a grease fire. In the event of a grease fire, NEVER add water. Use baking soda or, if the fire is in a pan, use a lid to smother the flame.

If youโ€™re trying to light a gas stove, always light the match before you turn on the gas. If the flame goes out, turn off the burner and let the gas disperse before attempting to re-light.

Once lit โ€“ know that color matters! The flame should always be blue, indicating your appliance is burning cleanly. A yellow/orange flame signifies incomplete combustion, which can waste gas and produce dangerous carbon monoxide. A red flame is typically a sign of airborne contaminants or a dirty burner.

๐Ÿšฒ๐Ÿ›ด E-Bike & Scooter Safety Reminder ๐Ÿ›ด๐Ÿšฒ

As e-bikes and electric scooters become more popular in our community, the Norwood City Board of Health encourages all riders to make safety a top priority.

Whether you're riding for fun, transportation, or recreation, please remember to:
โœ… Obey all traffic laws and signals
โœ… Ride in the same direction as traffic
โœ… Yield to pedestrians
โœ… Wear a properly fitted helmet
โœ… Stay alert and avoid distractions while riding
โœ… Use lights and reflective gear when riding at dusk or night

Parents play an important role in keeping young riders safe. Take time to teach children the rules of the road, proper riding techniques, and the importance of respecting traffic signs and signals. Before allowing a child to ride an e-bike or scooter independently, make sure they understand how to operate it safely and responsibly.

By working together, we can help prevent injuries and keep our streets safe for everyone.

Ride Smart. Ride Safe. Follow the Rules.

๐Ÿšฎ Norwood City Board of Health Community Reminder ๐Ÿšฎ

The Norwood City Board of Health would like to remind residents to help keep our community clean, safe, and free of nuisance conditions by following the City's waste collection ordinances, including City of Norwood Ordinances 527.02 and 527.03.

Please remember:

โœ… Trash containers may be placed at the curb after 5:00 PM on the day before your scheduled collection.

โœ… Trash containers must be removed from the curb and returned to their proper storage location by midnight on collection day.

โœ… Lids must remain securely on garbage containers to help prevent litter, odors, and pests.

โœ… Cardboard boxes must be broken down and bundled before disposal.

โ™ป๏ธ If placing items out for recycling, please ensure that only approved recyclable materials are placed in your recycling container. Contaminated recycling carts may not be collected by the Rumpke recycling truck.

These simple steps help keep our neighborhoods clean, protect public health, and ensure efficient collection services for all residents.

Thank you for doing your part to keep Norwood a clean and beautiful place to live!
