*Fire Restrictions to Stage 1:
San Miguel County will be reducing fire restrictions for all unincorporated, privately-owned lands within the county to Stage 1 from Stage 2. effective at 12:01am on Friday, August 21, 2026.
The recent rains have slightly improved conditions but the data we review still indicates very high fire danger across our region. Please continue to be vigilant.
*Stage 1 restrictions prohibit the following:
-Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, or stove fire except within a permanently constructed fire grate in a developed campground, developed recreation site, or improved site
-Charcoal grills are permitted on private property, and gas and propane grills are permitted as long as they have an “on-off” switch for flames
-Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, or a developed recreation site, or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable materials
-Cigarette butts must be fully extinguished and disposed of in appropriate receptacles
-Personal use of fireworks
-Use of explosive materials, including explosive targets
-Welding or operation of an acetylene or other similar torch with open flame except in an area that has been cleared of vegetation
-Operating any internal combustion engine (such as a chainsaw) without a spark-arresting device and without possessing a fire extinguisher.

The GMUG and Uncompaghre Field Office will also be reducing their fire restrictions to Stage 1 at the same time and the San Juan NF and Tres Rios Field Office have already reduced their restrictions to Stage 1. Some of our neighboring counties will remain in Stage 2 at least through next week.

On Sunday afternoon, the pilot of a helicopter assigned to the Gold Mountain Fire was killed when the aircraft crashed into Silver Jack Reservoir in Gunnison County, approximately 15 miles northeast of Ouray. The San Miguel County Sheriff's Office, along with the Telluride, Norwood, and Egnar Fire Protection Districts, joins all those mourning the loss of this courageous pilot. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and fellow firefighters and aviation crews who worked alongside him in service to our communities.
