September is National Preparedness Month, and while "being prepared" sounds like something people nag you about, it really just comes down to knowing what to do if things go wrong on campus.

Whether it’s severe weather moving through South Bend, a power outage in the dorms, or an actual emergency, having a basic plan makes all the difference.

Over the next few weeks, NDPD and NDFD will drop simple, practical tips you can actually use. Just the steps you need to keep yourself and your roommates safe

🚨First assignment for today: Double-check your contact info in the ND Alert system through InsideND so you never miss a urgent safety broadcast. Students, faculty and staff are automatically enrolled.

Welcome back to campus, Notre Dame community! As we kick off the fall semester, high temperatures and intense humidity are expected to make conditions potentially dangerous over the next several days.

Whether you're walking across campus between classes, hitting a outdoor practice, or working outside on campus, your body takes a hit much faster than you think.

A few quick rules for the week:

• Hydrate early, hydrate often. Aim for about 4 cups of water every hour if you’re outside. Swap the second iced coffee for water, caffeine speeds up dehydration.

• Use the buddy system. Keep an eye on your friends, roommates, and coworkers. If someone stops sweating, seems confused, or gets extremely dizzy, step in.

• Dress for the weather. Lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothes are key.

• Pace yourself. Save intense outdoor workouts or heavy physical tasks for early morning or after sunset when temperatures dip.

If an employee or student shows signs of heat-related illness, act quickly. Get them to a cool environment immediately. Non-emergency cases can be evaluated at the Notre Dame Wellness Center. For immediate medical emergencies on campus, dial 911 or contact NDPD Dispatch.

Let's keep campus safe this week. 💧

Officer Miller took a quick break during afternoon patrol to tickle the ivories over at LaFortune Student Center.

Moments like these are our favorite part of the job. Building a safe campus isn't just about safety checks and emergency calls. It's about being present, sharing a laugh, and connecting with the student community we serve every day.

Honoring those who gave everything. 💙

We were deeply honored to participate in Fallen Heroes Day at Four Winds Field earlier this week alongside our local first responder partners and the Bend Cubs. Standing together to remember our fallen brothers and sisters is a powerful reminder of why we do what we do.

Grateful for this community and everyone who came out to support the families of our heroes.

We want to make sure everyone gets where they are going safely this semester. That is why we remind you - "Eyes Up Irish". It is a simple reminder to put your phone in your pocket, pull out those earbuds, and look both ways before stepping into the street.

Our NDPD officers will be hanging out at busy intersections all week long. You will definitely see us at Courtney Lane and Twyckenham, so feel free to wave or say hi as you cross.

Keep those eyes up and have a fantastic first week!

First day of class fit check! Our K9 crew showed up fully equipped with their new gear and backpacks, ready to keep campus safe. Meanwhile, Orla decided the snooze button was the only acceptable choice this morning. Honestly, valid.

Whether you are hitting the quad bright and early or clinging to those last five minutes of sleep like Orla, NDPD has your back all semester. Say hi if you see our working dogs out on patrol today. Have a great semester, Irish.

We are SO excited to see everyone today!

Stop by our tables outside Hesburgh Library, South Dining Hall and Duncan Student Center. You might just get to meet one of our cute K9s, too!

Welcome to campus! Move-in day can be hectic, but with the right preparations it can be fun too.

🚗 Tag-Team the Car: Make sure one person stays with your car (and your belongings) at all time
🚪 Don't Prop the Doors: We know that mini-fridge is heavy, but the first step to being a good neighbor is keeping our buildings safe.
🚫 Follow the Leader: Our Parking Services staff are trained to keep you safe and to keep traffic flowing. Keep an eye out for them and follow all their directions.
💧 Hydrate & Breathe: Forecasts are looking warm and drinking plenty of water and taking breaks is essential when you’re hard at work hauling boxes.
📱 Save Our Number: Save 574-631-5555 in your phone right now, and download the ND Safe App. If you need help, we're here 24/7!

If you see our officers out on patrol or strolling through residence halls, be sure to say hi! 🚓👋

Want to be right on the front lines for gamedays and campus events? We are looking for event medical volunteers to join the team.

If you have basic first aid skills, a current CPR certification, and can pass a quick background check, you are already halfway there.

You will work alongside our crew, get real hands-on experience, and help keep our community safe during some of the biggest events of the year.

Drop Sarah Ingle an email at [email protected] to grab your spot or ask any questions.
