The USDA has released updated 2026 payment rates for the Livestock Forage Disaster Program (LFP), which helps ranchers recover from grazing losses caused by drought.
When drought dries up pasture, producers are often forced to buy expensive feed, reduce herd sizes, or sell cattle earlier than planned. LFP helps keep ranches operating during some of the toughest conditions agriculture faces.
Why should consumers care?
Because the effects of drought don’t stop at the pasture gate. When livestock producers struggle, it impacts the entire food supply chain. Fewer cattle, higher feed costs, and reduced production can all contribute to higher food prices and supply challenges down the road.
Programs like LFP help stabilize our food supply, support rural economies, and keep family ranches in business. This isn’t a handout. It’s disaster assistance tied to documented drought conditions and real economic losses.
Whether you raise cattle or simply buy groceries, a strong agricultural sector benefits all of us.
