E-Bike 101

The Montrose County Sheriff’s Office has seen a significant increase in e-bike use across our communities. We understand concerns about unsafe riding, and we’re listening.

While most e-bikes are simply bicycles with electric assistance, some high-powered models can reach speeds that make crashes far more serious. Their speed and quiet operation can also create risks for riders, pedestrians, and drivers.

Remember:
• Helmets are required for certain riders
• E-bikes must obey all traffic laws
• Riders must yield to pedestrians, especially on shared paths
• Some high-powered or modified e-bikes may not be legal

The key distinction: Traditional e-bikes are not the primary concern. The growing issue involves high-powered electric motorcycles marketed as “e-bikes.” Many exceed Colorado’s 750-watt limit and can reach speeds of 30–65+ mph. These vehicles are legally classified as motor vehicles and require registration, insurance, and a valid driver’s license.

The Montrose County Sheriff’s Office goal is simple: keep riders, pedestrians, drivers, and neighborhoods safe.

THINKING NEIGHBORLY
Here is a guide to handling loud music issues based on best practices:
1. Initial Approach: Friendly Communication
Talk in person: Calmly explain that the music is loud and explain how it affects you (e.g., waking a baby, disturbing sleep, impacting work).
Assume they don't know: Approach with the assumption that they are unaware of the disturbance rather than malicious, which keeps the conversation less adversarial.
Suggest compromises: Propose specific times for quiet or ask them to lower the bass, which often carries through walls better than treble.
Leave a polite note: If you are too nervous for a face-to-face, leave a note with your contact info, but avoid passive-aggressive, sarcastic notes.

2. Documentation (Crucial Step)
If the noise continues, start building a record. This is essential if you need to involve management or the police.
Keep a log: Note the dates, times, and types of noise.
Record the noise: Use your phone to record the sound from inside your home.
Measure decibels: Use a smartphone app to track noise levels.

3. Escalate Safely
If talking fails, escalate through proper channels rather than retaliating.
Landlord/Property Manager: Report the issue in writing, attaching your log of incidents.

Mediation: Consider community mediation services if you want to avoid legal action.
Police (Non-Emergency Line): Call the police non-emergency line.

What NOT to Do...
Do not retaliate: Blasting your own music back or screaming back at them rarely solves the problem and often escalates it.
Avoid aggressive confrontation: Keep your emotions in check during conversations.
Do not use 911: Never use emergency lines for noise complaints.
