Yesterday Nye Fire responded to a grass fire immediately followed by a lightning strike fire in remote, rugged terrain at the top of Rabbit Gulch above Horseman’s Flat.

A hand crew hiked in and worked into the night to get a line around it, keeping it to an acre. Forest Service personnel provided reinforcements and stayed to monitor through the night. Fortunately air support came available this morning for bucket drops and smoke jumpers were also assigned and continue to work to extinguish the fire.

Thanks also to Absarokee Fire for sending resources on standby, and thank you to the recreators at the Initial Creek campground for their cooperation with evacuation.

We’re expecting more thunderstorms this week so we appreciate the public’s help in watching for lightning caused fires so we can continue to get on top of them quickly.

A Red Flag Warning and a Heat Advisory are in effect from noon until 9 p.m. today, Aug. 1, as temperatures between 95 to 105 degrees are forecast. The National Weather Service is advising that people stay in air-conditioned rooms, stay out of the sun, wear lightweight clothing and stay hydrated. The combination of high temperatures, strong west winds and low humidities will also create ”extreme fire behavior.”
