Owyhee Irrigation District

Owyhee Irrigation District Supplying irrigation water to over 167,000 acres of land in Adrian, Nyssa, and Ontario since 1932. Irrigated agriculture is the region's primary industry.

The major drainage system is the Owyhee River, a tributary of the Snake River. The Owyhee Project, constructed by the Bureau of Reclamation, harnesses the unpredictable Owyhee River to provide water to the fertile soils of the Owyhee and Central Snake River Valleys. In 2008 the valley celebrated the 75th anniversary of the dedication of the Owyhee Dam. In 1925, after studying various reports and p

lans made by the Government engineers, State cooperative boards, and private companies, after conducting further investigation of their own, the Bureau issued a feasibility report recommending the construction of the Owyhee Project. Work began on the storage dam and canal system in 1928, and the first water was delivered to the project lands in 1935. The Owyhee Project was designed to supply water to the entire project area by gravity flow from the Owyhee Reservoir. But, because the Owyhee River's flow is frequently too low to supply the necessary water, privately-constructed pumping plants provide Snake River water to lower-lying project lands. These plants are operated under a 1936 contract between the Bureau of Reclamation and several irrigation districts.

🚒 Wildfire prevention work is underway in Malheur County

Owyhee Irrigation District is partnering with the U.S. Wildland Fire Service on a multi‑year wildfire risk reduction project supported by the Bureau of Land Management, with more than $1.3 million in combined BLM and local funding.

The effort focuses on areas from Adrian to the Snake River and includes:
• Strengthening fuel breaks along canal and desert access roads
• Improving emergency response access and water supply points for firefighters
• Managing invasive vegetation that fuels wildfires
• Outreach to local landowners on wildfire prevention and preparedness
This project runs through 2029 and is designed to help protect homes, farms, infrastructure, and communities across Malheur County.

🔥 Proactive prevention today helps protect Malheur County tomorrow.

We were proud to host the Owyhee Field Days event this week at the Owyhee Dam!

Each year, the Owyhee Watershed Council brings together surrounding elementary school 5th grade classes for two days of learning, exploration, and hands-on experiences focused on agriculture, water, and natural resources.

A big thank you to the dedicated Water Shed Council for all their hard work putting this event together as well as the FFA students, participating businesses, volunteers, and educators who help make this event possible each year. It’s always exciting to see students engaged and learning about the important role water and irrigation play in our community.

Thank you Willow Creek for sharing this wonderful photo of your students and the incredible view of the Owyhee Dam!
