Special Olympics Illinois Summer Games

The 2026 Special Olympics Illinois Summer Games brought together athletes, Unified partners, coaches, volunteers, and supporters from across the state for a weekend focused on inclusion, determination, and achievement.

We are especially proud of the members of our department who participated in the inaugural Unified Co****le competition:

🥇 Chief Brueggeman and his Unified partner, Daniel Lourwood, earned a gold medal.

🏅 Captain Mike and his Unified partner, James Lourwood, achieved an impressive 4th-place finish.

Sergeant Nick Schmidt was also on hand throughout the entire weekend, supporting the athletes, handing out medals, Dancing the night away, and helping make the event a memorable experience for everyone involved.

A special shout-out goes to all of the Parent Teacher Organization for Exceptional Children - PTOEC, Beverly Farms, and our other local athletes from Special Olympics Illinois- Region J, whose hard work, dedication, and positive attitudes continue to inspire those around them. Their determination and enthusiasm embody the true spirit of Special Olympics and remind us that success is measured not only by medals, but by courage, perseverance, and friendship.

On Tuesday, June 9, 2026, 51-year-old, David S. Shovlin, of O’Fallon, IL pled guilty, in St. Clair County Court, to Involuntary Manslaughter (Class 3 felony) and Obstructing Justice (Class 4 felony) for his role in the death of, 31-year-old, Allison Hartmire, of O'Fallon, IL on October 23, 2023.

On October 23, 2023, at about 2:49am, Allison was brought into the Memorial East Hospital with traumatic head injuries which resulted in her death. The O’Fallon Police Department was contacted and, in collaboration with the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office, began an extensive investigation into the circumstances of her death.

David’s charges and convictions were the result of plea negotiations with the St. Clair County State’s Attorney’s Office. David was not detained and is scheduled for sentencing on August 26, 2026.

Members of O'Fallon PD braved the rainy weather on Monday to complete our leg of the 2026 Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics intra-state relay. Law Enforcement agencies run the Torch through cities throughout the state to raise awareness for the Athletes of Special Olympics Illinois.

All the Torches will come together at Illinois State University this weekend for the annual Summer Games. We wish all the Athletes competing good luck and safe travels!

Civilian Public Safety Employee Recognition Week

This week, we're recognizing the civilian professionals who help keep our community safe.

Whether it's maintaining records, processing FOIA requests, supporting daily operations, serving as community service officers, providing social services, managing evidence, or handling countless other responsibilities, these employees are an important part of our public safety team.

Their hard work, dedication, and commitment to service help ensure our departments can effectively meet the needs of our residents every day.

Last night (06/07/26) residents saw a large police presence in the area of Edgewood Dr. in the Timber Creek subdivision, that was in reference to a subject fleeing a traffic stop from another agency. This morning, an attentive resident alerted OPD of a suspicious subject walking out of the creek in the area appearing out of place. OPD units responded and successfully took the subject into custody and transferred custody to the Illinois State Police. There are no ongoing concerns for citizens in the Timber Creek area. We want to thank the citizens that called for reporting suspicious activity, teamwork at its finest!

Day 5: OPD Youth Academy

🚨today was all about the real Heroes- the O'Fallon Fire Dept...here they learned about the different equipment, fire safety, how to use the fire hoses, and most importantly- proper sleep techniques

🚨they ended the day with Pizza and a Graduation...everyone took home a little swag as well

Now, will they decide the Police or Fire in their future...time will tell

Thank you to each one of them for giving up a week of their summer break to see what being a police officer in O'Fallon is like.
