Think beyond "one kit per household." Build around REAL needs: backup power for medical devices, temperature-safe medication storage, sensory supports, accessible transportation, service-animal supplies, communication boards, extra hearing-aid batteries, and instructions for caregivers. Label equipment, keep a written medication list, and practice without assuming elevators, cell service, or the usual caregiver will be available.

A communications plan should work even when calls don't. Choose one out-of-area contact who can serve as the family information hub. Every household member should know that person's name and number - not just have it saved in their phone. Add printed contact cards to backpacks, wallets, and mobility equipment.

During an emergency, send short texts such as: "SAFE at library. Battery 42%. Staying until 6." Avoid repeated calls, large attachments, or livestreaming when networks are strained.

Preparedness is not a closet full of supplies. It is the ability to make a good decision quickly - when the power is out, roads are blocked, alerts conflict, or family members are separated. This National Preparedness Month, we are moving beyond the basics.

Each day, take one practical action: identify a safe room, protect a medication, map a flood-free route, learn how to shut off a utility (or teach the kids), or talk through where you would reunite. This class provides actionable information to help citizens prepare themselves and their families for disasters. In addition you will learn about the disaster declaration process and what forms of assistance may or may not be available to you following a major disaster.
