I want to acknowledge what was announced today, but am struggling to find words that feel adequate.

My thoughts are with the entire Hollenbeck community, and with our District community as a whole. I am grateful to the St. Charles County Police Department and all those involved in responding to this incredibly difficult situation.

Most importantly, my heart is with any children and families who may have been affected.

As a Board member, I need to be mindful of what I can say while this matter is being investigated, but I did not want to let today pass without acknowledging the impact this news has had on our community.

Happy Back to School, FHSD!!!

To our students, this is a new year and a new you. Put effort into everything you do, make good friends, and show kindness to everyone. If you’re a senior, we all know what the destination is, but don’t forget about the journey. Enjoy your senior year and soak up everything.

To our parents, especially those who have kindergarteners, 6th graders, and 9th graders—they’re going to do great, and they’re going to be fine. They are in the hands of dedicated, talented, and caring teachers and staff. Please remember to show grace and understanding these first couple of weeks. Buses may be late, and schedules may need some tinkering, but it always gets worked out.

To our teachers and staff, thank you for all your planning, preparation, and the thousand other things you have to do each year to get to the 1st day. I know this year, in particular, has started off rough and has caused frustration, and I’m truly sorry. I hope you all have a great year, and I’m proud to stand beside you.

The most important takeaway from last night’s Board meeting is that the mold remediation at Warren is complete, and all the tests indicated the building is safe and ready to welcome back its Huskies. When the contractor was asked if he would be comfortable sending his own family to school at Warren, his answer was a very confident “yes.” I want to thank the contractors who came in and got to work quickly to make this possible, as well as all of our custodians who worked so hard throughout this process, sometimes without AC, to finish getting the building ready for the start of school.

We also approved an updated policy that would allow students and community members to use the high school tennis courts when they aren’t being used for school activities. This initial policy approval is for usage on weekdays only until 8 p.m., but Superintendent Delaney is planning on asking the Policy Committee to take a further look at it and consider if and how weekend access could occur. Thank you to everyone who shared their opinions, especially our student tennis players. While it sadly isn’t possible to accommodate every request, this shows the importance of sharing your suggestions and concerns with administration and the Board.

Finally, I discovered that my parliamentary parlance needs a little work, as what makes sense in my head doesn’t always come out of my mouth the same way…

The August meeting agenda should be released on Monday. If you would like to discuss any items on the agenda or have anything else you’d like to discuss, I will be at Spencer Road library, Study Room C on Wednesday from 6-7pm, and would love to talk to you! Normally, I hold these events on Tuesdays, but I am seeing Spiderman that evening 🙂

If you are unable to attend, but would still like to get in touch, please leave a comment on this post and I will respond throughout the week.

Other Board members may also attend this meeting, and depending on the concerns raised, I may direct you to the appropriate person or department that is best able to assist.

Please know that prior to a Board decision, I speak as one of seven Board members and will share my own views and opinions. Once the Board has considered an issue and a vote has been taken, however, I will respect, honor, and support the decision of the Board as a whole.

Tomorrow at 5pm at 801, we will have our Board Retreat. If you’ve never been to one, well…neither have I, so we will all be learning something new!

This isn’t a business meeting, but for us to talk about certain areas surrounding governance, our goals, and any changes we may want to make regarding Board business. It’s an open meeting so everyone is welcome to attend in person or online.

If you haven’t already done so, I would strongly recommend going to vote411.org to see what and who will be on the August 4th ballot. This website allows you to look at different party ballots, read summarized versions of amendments and answers to questions posed to candidates - allowing you to be an informed voter when you head to the ballot box tomorrow.

Quackers (Becky-David), Patriot Pete (Bryan), and Mr. Puddles (Parents as Teachers) had a great time exploring London, Oxford, and Stratford-upon-Avon. Their highlight though, was the Jack the Ripper walking tour.
