Today's featured recipe from the Oacoma Centennial Cookbook (1893–1993) is Meatball Stroganoff, submitted by Barbara Speck.

One of our favorite parts isn't even the recipe—it's Barbara's reassuring note:

The **Chamberlain-Oacoma Area Chamber of Commerce** is looking for **food trucks and food vendors** to join us for our annual **Harvest Festival**!

📅 **Saturday, September 26, 2026**
🕘 **9:00 AM – 3:00 PM**
📍 **Oacoma City Park**

Our Harvest Festival is a family-friendly community event featuring vendors, live music, activities, and more. We typically welcome **300–400 attendees**, making it a great opportunity to showcase your menu, meet new customers, and be part of one of the area's favorite fall events.

🚂 Did You Know? | Oacoma's Railroad Legacy

Before highways connected South Dakota, the railroad helped shape the future of communities across the state—and Oacoma played an important role in that story.

In 1905, the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway crossed the Missouri River from Chamberlain to the west bank near Oacoma using an early pile-and-barge railroad bridge. The following year, construction continued west across Lyman County as part of the Milwaukee Road's ambitious expansion toward the Black Hills and the Pacific Northwest.

Oacoma wasn't just another stop along the tracks—it became an important gateway to West River, connecting eastern rail markets with agricultural producers, growing communities, and new opportunities for commerce and settlement.

The historic locomotive featured here represents the type of Milwaukee Road steam engines that powered this era of expansion and transformed transportation across South Dakota.

We're excited to kick off a brand-new series featuring recipes from the Oacoma Centennial Cookbook (1893–1993)—a collection of family favorites that have been preserved by generations of Oacoma residents.

Our very first recipe is Grandma Ransford's Doughnuts, submitted to the cookbook by Ruth Harmon. These handwritten family recipes are more than just ingredients and instructions—they're a delicious piece of our community's history.
