Ever driven west of Oacoma on I-90 and wondered what those mysterious brick and concrete structures are out in the hills? 🤔

These fascinating remnants are part of an old mining operation dating back to the early 1900s, when the area was bustling with activity tied to mineral mining in central South Dakota. Today, the structures remain as a unique reminder of the region’s rich and rugged history.

A special thank you to Michael Zimny for capturing these incredible photos of the site and helping showcase one of Oacoma’s hidden historic curiosities. 📸

to Main Street in Oacoma, South Dakota — over a century ago. 🤎

Long before Interstate 90 and modern river crossings, Oacoma was already welcoming travelers along the Missouri River. Dirt streets, wooden storefronts, lumber yards, and frontier businesses lined the west bank as this small prairie town helped shape the history of central South Dakota.

Just beyond this historic scene, Lewis & Clark camped near present-day American Island in 1804, connecting Oacoma to one of America’s earliest exploration stories.

Today, Oacoma continues that tradition of hospitality as the western gateway to the Chamberlain-Oacoma area — where visitors can still experience the beauty of the Missouri River, local businesses, rich history, and small-town charm.
