Oak Brook, Illinois. The Illinois State Crime Commission and National Pit Bull Defense Fund are working to enhance criminal penalties for anyone convicted of animal abuse. The new penalties make it illegal for anyone convicted of animal abuse to possess a firearm, mirroring similar penalties for domestic battery. The Illinois State Crime Commission was instrumental in passing legislation that forbids anyone convicted of domestic violence, battery, or violating an order of protection from owning or possessing a firearm.

As seen in recent news, Nikolas Cruz opened fire on his school last week killing 17 people and injuring many others. It has been confirmed that Nikolas started at a young age abusing animals. As well, Devin Kelley, who killed more than 26 people in a recent church shooting, also started at an early age abusing the animals.

Studies have shown that serial killers, mass murderers and domestic terrorists start at a very young age by torturing animals. The Illinois State Crime Commission is demanding that any person that is convicted of a felony or misdemeanor animal abuse be denied their Firearm Owners Identification Card or, in the event that their FOID is current, that it be revoked. With convictions, offenders will be denied a FOID card, or in the event that their card is current, that it will be revoked.

“We need to enforce gun laws we already have and keep guns out of the hands of known animal abusers and domestic violence offenders. Most importantly, we need to understand the link between mass shootings, serial killings, domestic violence and animal abuse,” said Amy Babson, president of the National Pit Bull Defense Fund.

“We fully intend to have this legislation presented and passed in Illinois first and then nationally,” said Illinois State Crime Commission Executive Director Jerry Elsner.
