Students in Deb Jansky's Textiles class work on removing stains in the annual stain removal lab on April 25th. One "tool" that students were amazed at was the iconic Fels Naptha soap as a satin remover. A much lower cost alternative to commercially marketed stain sticks!

Lipstick, candle wax, mustard and ink...what do these things have in common? They are all some of the stains that the Textiles class had to try to remove from fabric in the stain removal lab. The toughest? Lipstick...watch out for that one ladies!
Another round of great window displays from this semester's Visual Merchandising class. The displays are the work of Shannon Mikolajczyk (top), Julia Krecklow (bottom left), and Polly Thao (bottom right).

Historical Fashion Trivia AND Fall/Winter 2014 Fashion Trend:
Here is a good example of how often, history keeps recycling silhouettes and styles. Back in the 1820's-1830's, sleeves reached their most ridiculous dimensions, forming huge puffs and wings (see picture)...shoulders virtually disappeared until the 1840's. The second photo is from the Thom Browne Resort 2014 collection which shows a more contemporary version of the extreme sleeve. At least with the latter, one can actually get through today's average 30" doorways.
On Monday, August 25th, our program hosted its first, program specific orientation for new students. A highlight was a speaker panel comprised of existing students and graduates. Thank you to (pictured from left) Polly Thao, Zeinab Younes, Paulette Schladensky, Melanie Lamp, Erica Lorenzo, Eric Fatke and Anna Zarnowski. Your enthusiasm for our program and the energy you brought to the panel discussion were most appreciated!
Welcome to the new semester to our new and returning students. Just wanted to share with you a great video for our program. A most special thank you to Jai Cherney who produced the video for us!

Historical Fashion Trivia:
In 1937, Dr. Wallace Hume Carothers created nylon. Little did he suspect that on May 15, 1940 when the first nylon stockings went on sale they would be a smash hit across the U.S. in department stores with 780,000 pairs being sold the first day! Who would have thought that a chemist would be the father of a major classic fashion item?
Historical Fashion Trivia:
In the Middle Ages when a young man married, he gave the bride's father one of his gloves as a symbol that he would take care of his new bride "single-handedly".
Hot off the press! Our new Fashion/Retail folders have arrived. If you, or someone you know, would like more information about MATC's Fashion/Retail Marketing program please contact Deb Jansky at [email protected] - it's your first step to starting an exciting, dynamic career!
Historical Fashion Tidbit:
The origin of denim was in Nîmes, France, where a fabric called "serge de Nîmes" was developed. It was a coarse, twilled fabric made of cotton, which was very strong and durable. The sails of the Niña, Pinta, and Santa María were made from this fabric. A version for trousers was later developed and called "denim".
Welcome to our new Fashion Retail Program Instructor Gretchen Davidson. Gretchen brings a wealth of experience from having worked in the advertising industry, as a buyer for both Bon Ton and Kohl's and most recently as a Senior Category Advisory Manager for Coca-Cola. Her energy and out-going personality will be a wonderful addition to MATC's Fashion Retail Program!
Congratulations to Fashion/Retail Marketing Program student Gina Schwab who received the Lamp of Knowledge AND the President's Award - both for academic excellence (GPA 4.0) and the latter also for service to MATC and/or the community.
Kudos to students Lily Cao, Erica Lorenzo and Paulette Schladensky who created this underwater display in their Visual Merchandising class!
Historical Fashion Tidbit:
It was Queen Elizabeth I, when having nowhere to put her 3000 dresses, designed a special room with a separate hook for each dress and so the closet was born.
Ever wonder why you have trouble matching colors? You just may have a real color deficiency. Or on the other hand, you may have great visual color accuity. A fun way to find out is to take a quick online assessment created by xrite.com and Pantone. Take the Farnsworth Munsell 100 Hue Test and see just how good you are at seeing nuances in color.
Tip: This does not work well when using Internet Explorer as a brower...try using Mozilla Firefox or another brower when doing this.
