Did you know that the birthstone for January is Garnet. Garnet is usually thought of as a gemstone but most garnet is mined for industrial uses. A very small number of garnets are pure and flawless enough to be cut as gemstones. The majority of garnet mining is for massive garnet that is crushed and used to make abrasives.
Garnet can come in virtually all colors, however, blue is very rare.

Today is Martin Luther King Day! As you may well know Martin Luther King was an important civil rights activist. He was a leader in the movement to end racial segregation in the United States. His most famous address was the "I Have A Dream" speech. He was an advocate of non-violent protest and became the youngest man to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He was assassinated in 1968.

Since it is a federal holiday, remember many places may be closed on this day.

In 2009 - Flight 1549 runs into a large flock of Canada Geese during takeoff from from New York City's LaGuardia Airport resulting in immediate and complete loss of thrust from both engines due to ingesting birds. The Pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger glides over the Hudson river finally ditching the airliner near the USS Intrepid museum about three minutes after losing power. The ditching and evacuation proved a complete success with all passengers and crew evacuated safely.

Be sure to watch the exciting movie about this vilified and later championed hero, aptly named "Sully" staring Tom Hanks!

National Dress Up Your Pet Day is observed each year on January 14. Pets do become part of one’s family. This day was created to make it a special day for them, to celebrate them and also to support the pet fashion community.

Take this day to have fun dressing up your pet, weather it be a warm coat before taking them for a walk, some booties for the snow, a tutu for them to look great in, or just imagining how good they'll look in a new outfit. Have fun with your pet!

National Milk Day is today, January 11th which commemorates the day many think the first milk deliveries in glass bottles began in the United States. Alexander Campbell of the New York Dairy Company professed to the New York State Senate that his company was the first to make these deliveries in 1878.

During the Middle Ages, people called milk the virtuous white liquor because alcoholic beverages were more reliable than water. In 1863, French chemist and biologist Louis Pasteur made it possible for milk and other food and drinks to be stored for more extended periods. He developed a method of killing harmful bacteria that is now called pasteurization.

In 1884, an American doctor, Hervey Thatcher of New York City, developed the first modern glass milk bottle. He called it the “Thatcher’s Common Sense Milk Jar.” He used a waxed paper disk to seal the milk in the glass bottle. Later, in 1932, plastic-coated paper milk cartons were introduced commercially as a consequence of their invention by Victor W. Farris.

Modern industrial processes use milk to produce casein, whey protein, lactose, condensed milk, powdered milk, and many other food-additive and industrial products.

Any way you celebrate this wonderful white liquid, do it today!

Tick Tock Day, observed annually on December 29th, reminds us to complete any unfinished business that might need addressing before the end of the year.

As the end of the year approaches, there are some things worth considering. Unfinished business usually needs to be wrapped up before the end of the calendar year. Things like larger business purchases and charitable donations for the tax year may need to be transacted before December 31st.

Another thing to consider is your medical plan. Does your deductible start over? Do you have a Flexible Savings Account with funds to use? Some employers offer annual benefits that will be lost if they aren’t used by the end of the year. Time is running out.

Another way to look at the observance is by looking at your personal goals. Did you finish reading that book? There’s still time to check a couple of things off a bucket list. Travel to the Grand Canyon. Eat escargot. Maybe your goals are grander or simpler. Whatever they are, tick-tock.

Today is Festivus!
Each year on December 23rd, Festivus commemorates a holiday episode of the television comedy, Seinfeld. In 1997, the popular television comedy brought Festivus to the masses when Frank Costanza (played by Jerry Stiller) explains he invented the holiday in response to the commercialism of Christmas. Its slogan is “A Festivus for the rest of us."

Festivus traditions derived from the television episode and the original creator have been combined over the years.

How to observe Festivus:
Adorn an aluminum Festivus pole to be displayed in the home. In the O’Keefe household, there was no pole. Instead, a clock was placed in a bag and nailed to the wall.

Serve a traditional dinner in the evening.

During dinner, allow the Airing of Grievances. Each person takes turns describing how the others have disappointed him or her over the past year.

Festivus Miracle – a frequent if unimpressive miracle. You may count carrying all the groceries into the house for dinner without tripping or dropping one of the bags as a Festivus Miracle.
