Always make sure to wear a life jacket. Boating incidents can occur suddenly, providing little to no time to find and put on a life jacket.

VDS knowledge.

Each month we will be focusing on one aspect of boating safety! This month, we are going to focus on distress signals. We will posting throughout the month about different forms of distress signals and best practices with them and so much more!

According to the BoatUS foundation, “The visual distress signal requirement for recreational boaters states that all boats when used on coastal waters, including the Great Lakes, the territorial seas and those waters directly connected to the Great Lakes and the territorial seas, up to a point where the waters are less than two miles wide, and boats owned in the United States when operating on the high seas must be equipped with visual distress signals. There are a handful of exceptions so you should always check your state regulations to be certain you comply.

Regardless of exemptions, all boaters should be able to signal for help. Boaters must have current dated US Coast Guard-approved day and night signals for all boats operating on coastal and open bodies of water.”

Auxiliary members hold many crucial support roles throughout the Coast Guard!

Aux Sue Carter spoke on her unique but crucial role supporting the active duty officers of tomorrow, “Serving as chaplain on the USCG Barque Eagle lets me fill a particular role in the lives of the officers and crew - and most especially the cadets. For the young women and men the chaplain can be a religious resource, a booster, and a calm influence in what can be a wonderful but stressful time. Sail 250 augments all of that. I champion their efforts and remind them that this is an historic voyage. Remember it and take it all in. Being here, I tell them, is truly a blessing - for all of us.”
