🚨 SCAM OF THE WEEK 🚨

The Accomack County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about an ACTIVE email scam currently circulating in Accomack County.

Be on the lookout for emails claiming to share an “important document” through Adobe Document Cloud or another file-sharing service.

⚠️ Red flags include:
• Generic wording with no specific details
• Pressure to click a “Review Document” button
• Unexpected file-sharing links
• Suspicious sender addresses or unfamiliar contacts
• Messages claiming urgency or importance without context

These scams are often designed to steal your email password or install malware on your device.

🛑 BEFORE YOU CLICK:
• Verify the sender independently
• Hover over links to inspect the destination
• Contact the person directly if you are unsure
• Never enter your password after clicking an unexpected link

If you clicked a suspicious link or entered your information:
• Change your passwords immediately
• Enable multi-factor authentication
• Report the incident to your IT department or local law enforcement

This scam may appear to come from a real person whose email account has been compromised, making it look more legitimate than it actually is.

Stay alert, slow down, and think before you click. A few seconds of caution can protect your personal information and finances.

🚨 SCAM OF THE WEEK 🚨

WRONG NUMBER TEXT SCAM

You receive a friendly text from someone you don’t know asking about plans or referencing a meeting. When you tell them they have the wrong number, they apologize and continue the conversation.

They may compliment you, ask where you live, and slowly try to build a connection.

This is NOT an accident.

Scammers use this method to start conversations and gain your trust. Over time, they may introduce investment opportunities, cryptocurrency trading, or other ways to get your money.

⚠️ RED FLAGS
• Claims of a “mistaken” text but keeps chatting anyway
• Overly friendly or flattering messages
• Asking personal questions like where you live
• Mentioning business or investment opportunities later

âś… HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF
• Do not engage in conversation
• Do not share personal information
• Block the number immediately
• Report as spam

Remember, a real wrong number usually ends with “sorry” and nothing more.

If they keep talking, it’s likely a scam.

Stay alert, stay safe.

🚨 SCAM OF THE WEEK — “Amazon Refund” Text Message 🚨
⚠️ This scam is actively circulating.

In this week’s scam, you receive a text message that appears to be from Amazon. The message claims that an item you purchased was defective, recalled, or of poor quality. It states that you are eligible for a full refund and a free replacement and provides a link to “view details” or “process your refund.”

Sounds helpful, right?

It’s not.

This is a smishing scam (text message phishing). The link in the message does not direct you to the official Amazon website. Instead, it takes you to a fake login page designed to look legitimate. If you enter your Amazon credentials, scammers immediately capture your username and password.

Once they gain access, they may:
• Make fraudulent purchases
• Steal saved payment information
• Access other accounts that share the same password

🔎 How to Protect Yourself

• Never click links in unexpected text messages
• Do not log in through links sent via text
• If you believe there is an issue with an Amazon order, open the official Amazon app or type www.amazon.com
directly into your browser
• Enable two factor authentication on your accounts
• Report suspicious texts by forwarding them to 7726 (SPAM)

🚫 Don’t click links from unknown senders — always go directly to the company’s official website by typing the address into your web browser.

Remember, if an offer seems too good to be true, it usually is. Scammers rely on urgency and the promise of “free” refunds to get you to act quickly.

If you believe you have entered your information on a fraudulent website, immediately change your passwords and monitor your financial accounts.

Stay alert, Accomack County
