🌳 Help Protect Oak Harbor from the Spotted Lanternfly! 🪰

Did you know that the invasive Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima) is one of the primary host plants for the invasive Spotted Lanternfly (SLF)?
While the Tree of Heaven may look like a native tree, such as sumac, it is an aggressive invasive species that spreads quickly and provides an ideal habitat for the Spotted Lanternfly—an insect that can damage grapes, fruit trees, hardwoods, and many ornamental plants.

How can you help?
✅ Learn to identify the Tree of Heaven on your property.
✅ Consider removing it using proper control methods. Simply cutting it down can actually make the problem worse by causing dozens of new shoots to sprout from its roots. The most effective time to control it is late summer through early fall (July–October) using appropriate herbicide treatments that kill the root system.
✅ Watch for Spotted Lanternflies and their egg masses. If you find them, destroy the egg masses by scraping them into soapy water or rubbing alcohol, and report sightings when appropriate.

How to identify a Tree of Heaven:
🌿 Large compound leaves with 10–40 leaflets
🌿 Smooth gray bark on younger trees
🌿 Leaves have a strong, unpleasant odor when crushed
🌿 Produces large clusters of winged seeds that spread easily

Still need help identifying a Tree of Heaven:
Contact the Village Administrators office at 419-898-5561 and someone from the Village Tree Commission will come out to help determine the tree species. Or Download and use the free SEEK APP https://apps.apple.com/us/app/seek-by-inaturalist/id1353224144 to determine the common name of the tree.

By removing invasive host trees and staying alert for Spotted Lanternflies, we can all help protect Oak Harbor's parks, neighborhoods, and natural resources.
Thank you for doing your part to keep our community healthy and beautiful! 🌳💚
