🚸📚 BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY REMINDER 📚🚸

As students across our community head back to school beginning September 1, North Whidbey Fire & Rescue would like to remind everyone to help keep our children safe on their journey to and from school.

🛑 Drivers: • Slow down and obey school zone speed limits. • Watch for children crossing streets and walking near roadways. • Be extra cautious during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times. • Stop for school buses displaying flashing red lights. Children's lives depend on it. • Put distractions away and stay focused on the road.

🚶 Students & Parents: • Always use designated crosswalks when available. • Look left, right, and left again before crossing. • Stay alert and avoid distractions from phones or earbuds. • Review your family's back-to-school safety plan and routes.

🚲 Bicyclists: • Always wear a properly fitted helmet. • Follow traffic laws and signals. • Wear bright or reflective clothing to increase visibility.

The start of the school year brings more buses, more vehicles, and more children to our roads. A little extra patience can go a long way toward ensuring every student arrives safely at school and returns home at the end of the day.

The WA Traffic Safety Commission (WTSC) has created an explainer video covering Washington’s laws for e-bikes, electric scooters, and other e-rides, including their classifications, where they can be ridden, and how to stay safe and legal.

It's a fun opportunity to strengthen community partnerships, meet the people who serve our communities, learn about local resources, and enjoy an evening with family and friends.

As we get ready to celebrate the Fourth of July, please remember to use fireworks responsibly and only during the legal discharge hours.

💥 Legal Fireworks Hours
📅 July 3: 9:00 AM – 11:00 PM
📅 July 4: 9:00 AM – Midnight

Before lighting any fireworks:
💧 Keep a bucket of water or hose nearby.
🏡 Be respectful of your neighbors, veterans, pets, and wildlife.
🌲 Never use fireworks in parks, on public property, or in dry grass or brush.
🚫 Remember that mortar-style fireworks are prohibited in unincorporated Island County, along with many other fireworks that are illegal under state law.

🌞 Beat the Heat. Stay Safe. 🌞

Warmer temperatures are here, and it's important to take steps to protect yourself, your family, and your neighbors from heat-related illness.

💧 Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
🏠 Move to a cool place if you begin feeling overheated, dizzy, or weak.
👵 Check on older adults, young children, and those with medical conditions, as they are especially vulnerable during hot weather.
🚗 Never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle—temperatures can become deadly in just minutes.

Know the warning signs:
☀️ Heat Cramps – Muscle cramps and heavy sweating
☀️ Heat Exhaustion – Dizziness, nausea, weakness, excessive sweating, and thirst
🚨 Heat Stroke – Confusion, loss of consciousness, very high body temperature, or seizures

Heat stroke is a life-threatening emergency. If you suspect someone is experiencing heat stroke, call 911 immediately. Our telecommunicators can provide lifesaving instructions while responders are on the way.

Together, we can help keep Island County safe this summer. ❤️☀️

Behind every 911 call is a calm voice working through chaos. ICOM Telecommunicators work 12-hour shifts handling everything from medical emergencies and domestic disputes to major accidents and life-threatening situations.

Our dispatchers gather critical information, coordinate police, fire, and EMS responses, provide lifesaving instructions like CPR, and support callers through some of the hardest moments of their lives — all while managing multiple screens, radios, and incoming calls at once.

It’s a career built on teamwork, quick thinking, compassion, and resilience. No two shifts are ever the same, but every shift matters. We are proud of the dedicated professionals who serve our community behind the headset each and every day. 🎧🚓🚒🚑
