The latest Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows the Sandusky MSA (Erie and Ottawa counties) is making a strong impact, ranking 1st in Ohio, 2nd in the Midwest, and 5th in the nation for job growth during the first four months of 2026.

“This recognition is a powerful reflection of the momentum building across our region. It speaks to the strength of our diverse economy, our employers and workforce, our public-private partnerships, and our continued investment in the future,” said Chris Singerling.

Congratulations to the employers, workforce, and community partners who continue to drive growth and opportunity across our region.

The Sandusky Metropolitan Statistical Area was ranked as the fifth-fastest-growing job market in the U.S. in April 2026, according to newly released employment data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Among all metropolitan areas nationwide, Sandusky posted a nearly 3% year-over-year increase in total nonfarm employment, making it the fastest-growing metro area in Ohio and the second-fastest-growing metro area in the Midwest— https://tinyurl.com/4m45vtfh

The OCIC team recently had the opportunity to tour the beautiful Lakeside Chautauqua and learn more about its impact on the region. Highlights included visits to the Hoover Auditorium, Orchestra Hall, Aquatic Center, and learning about the community’s 54 historic buildings, most dating back to the early 1900s. Founded in 1873, Lakeside welcomes an estimated 150,000 visitors each summer and offers a unique blend of arts, education, recreation, wellness, and family programming.

We also met with Andy Bruening, who recently opened LEMI Labs, a makerspace where youth and adults can learn CAD design, 3D printing, laser cutting, and fabrication skills. To learn more about Andy’s story and vision for LEMI Labs, be sure to tune in to the Shores & Islands Ohio podcast this coming Monday.

Special thanks to Gretchen Colon for the warm welcome and insightful conversations!

Lake Erie was putting on a show during our visit with Ainsley Rutkowski, General Manager of The Wave at Marblehead.

Located along the shores of Lake Erie in Marblehead, The Wave has transformed the former Lighthouse Resort into a modern boutique hotel and waterfront dining destination, helping elevate the visitor experience in our region. The property features lakeside accommodations, expanded amenities, and host Brunch Bingo every Saturday — because great food, lake views, and bingo make for a pretty fun combination!
