🔥 Fire Fact Friday: Simple Habits That Prevent Home Fires 🔥

Fire safety doesn’t have to be complicated—small, everyday actions can make a big difference.

🏡 In the kitchen:
• Stay in the kitchen while cooking, unattended cooking is the #1 cause of home fires
• Keep anything that can burn away from the stovetop

🕯️ Around the home:
• Blow out candles before leaving the room or going to bed
• Keep candles at least 12 inches from anything that can burn

⚡ Electrical safety:
• Don’t overload outlets or power strips
• Replace damaged cords right away

🚨 Be prepared:
• Test smoke alarms monthly
• Practice your home escape plan with everyone in your household

Fire prevention starts with awareness and the good news is, most home fires are preventable.

This morning, Battalion Chief Mike Engle completed his final shift with the Oak Harbor Fire Department, closing an extraordinary chapter of service spanning 39 years as a firefighter, officer, chief officer, and mentor.

For nearly three decades with Oak Harbor Fire Department, Mike has led with professionalism, integrity, humility, and a genuine commitment to the people he served alongside and the community he protected. His knowledge, steady leadership, and willingness to invest in others have left a lasting impact on generations of firefighters.

Throughout his career, Mike served four communities: Washington State University Fire Department, Central Whidbey Fire & Rescue, Naval Air Station Whidbey Island Fire & Emergency Services, and Oak Harbor Fire Department. Along the way, he helped shape the fire service and made countless contributions that will continue to benefit our organization for years to come.

As Mike begins his well-earned retirement, we extend our deepest gratitude not only to him, but also to his family, whose support and sacrifices made this remarkable career possible.

Please join us in thanking Battalion Chief Mike Engle for his decades of dedicated service and wishing him all the best in retirement.

Congratulations, Chief. You’ve earned it
