The Ohio State Highway Patrol is mourning the loss of Trooper Nicholas P. Cayton, of the Canfield Post, after he died as a result of being hit while in his cruiser by a semi-truck on state Route 11 south of U.S. 224 in Canfield, Ohio. Trooper Cayton was assisting a disabled commercial vehicle at the time of the crash.
“Today, the Patrol lost a member of our family. This is a tragedy for the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Ohio Department of Public Safety”, said Colonel Charles A. Jones, Patrol Superintendent. “Our prayers go out to the Cayton family during this difficult time.”

Please join us in praying for the Morrow County Sheriff’s Deputy who was killed in the line of duty.

We extend our deepest condolences to the deputy’s family, friends, and the entire Morrow County Sheriff’s Office.

Here’s the statement from Morrow County Sheriff John L. Hinton:

On Monday evening, the Morrow County Sheriff's Office received a call reporting a domestic situation. A sheriff’s deputy responded to a residence located at the 100 block of County Road 26 in Marengo.

Upon the deputy arriving to the residence, an officer involved shooting occurred. The deputy was struck and transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The subject was also shot and was transported to a hospital in serious condition.
There are no words to express the pain being felt by our office.
The incident is under investigation by the Delaware County Sherriff's Office, with assistance by the Ohio Attorney General's Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Any inquiries about the investigation should be directed to the Delaware County Sherriff's Office.

The incident remains an active investigation.
