The atmosphere seems to know Meteorological Fall is just a few days away as rain is in the forecast and potentially lots of it for some areas, especially tonight into Saturday morning. A rather energetic trough of low pressure is currently moving south towards us along the BC coast to our north. This will bring in lots of showers and the potential for some thunderstorms tonight through Saturday morning. We will then get a reprieve Sunday, Monday, and maybe even Tuesday before models show our potential first true fall-like storm system of the season moving down out of the Gulf of Alaska. Those that are growing tomatoes might want to put a plastic force field around them…
As I type this, I’m already seeing rain shower activity starting to increase over the Olympic Peninsula as the effects of the storm system to our north slowly begin to act on the terrain. This will be the start of a long-lasting convergence zone that will develop as upper-level winds rounding the base of the system wrap around the Olympic Mountains and converge over the Whidbey Island area. Rain showers should start making their way off the Olympics and over us in the next couple of hours. They will then last on and off for parts of the area through 7-10am Saturday morning. However, as we head later into this evening and overnight, instability will increase and the upper-level winds will strengthen. This will cause the updrafts in the showers to become more intense thus increasing the rainfall rates to likely heavy levels. Lightning will also become a threat, particularly around 12am through 6-8am. Central and South Whidbey, most of Camano, and areas to south and east will be the *most likely* spots for the heaviest rain and greatest thunderstorm potential. As this system moves out of the area, a very weak ridge of high pressure will take its place leaving us in dry conditions Saturday afternoon through Monday. Monday actually looks to be mostly sunny other than some high clouds, but the rest of this time period looks mostly cloudy. Tuesday looks mostly dry as well, but some rain showers may try to sneak in. High temperatures will be in the low to upper 60s Saturday and Sunday with some 70s coming into the picture for the warmest areas on Monday and Tuesday. Lows will be in the 50s…
The next big weather story will move in on Wednesday with widespread rain and gusty southerly winds. There is too much model disagreement to go in depth to exactly answer the “when and what” questions, but just imagine yourself drinking a cup of coffee or tea with the trees swaying and rain occasionally hitting the windows. Some models do show southerly wind gusts approaching 40-45mph so this will need to be watched closer than normal due to full foliage on trees.
