I realize that you might not live in Wicker Park. But I think you appreciate historic architecture like I do. The Wicker Park Preservation and Development Committee opposes this proposal to build something on what they consider a Protected Side lot. The neighbors have asked me for my help because I have lived in Wicker Park for 27 years. We are not trying to tell a private owner what to do. But to bring attention to something that has been forgotten. We must remember the reason we love Chicago. And here is the reason. THIS is the Last Open Lot in the Wicker Park Historic District! ● Wicker Park Historic District established in 1989 ○ 101 open lots ● Only 1 open lot remains! - this one. Yes, 100 that were marked on the Historic Designation Map have been built upon. ● No matter how THIS case turns out, we are using this as an opportunity to bring attention to consider whether the remaining lots are truly protected, or not? 2021 brings the 55th anniversary National Historic Preservation Act passed by Congress. On the topic of Historic Homes and Buildings, President John F. Kennedy said "A nation can be a victim of amnesia. It can lose the memories of what it was, and thereby lose the sense of what it is or wants to be." The National Historic Preservation Act is an expression of our national will to embrace the past and affirm its bearing on our present and our future. In the midst of urban renewal, the preservation movement came into its own, reflecting a growing consciousness of the past in the wake of what was being destroyed. In Boston, nearly a third of the old city was demolished, including its historic West End, to clear the way for high-rises and a new freeway. 55 years ago, in Chicago, one architectural treasure after another fell to the wrecking ball. Cities across America experienced the same drastic transfiguration. The changes sweeping the nation in the 1960s were profound. There was a growing awareness that cultural heritage was threatened. In 1967, the Preservation rallying cry was "We do not, use bombs.... to destroy irreplaceable structures related to the story of America's civilization. We use the corrosion of neglect or the thrust of bulldozers... Connections between successive generations of Americans are broken by demolition. Sources of memory cease to exist." It’s not me trying to stick my nose in a private owner’s business. I am a historian and I use history to bring light to what has been forgotten and let others make the decision. This will help support the Wicker Park Committee's case before the Commission on Chicago Landmarks on March 4. In a dense neighborhood, a beautiful greenspace is a treasure. Each year Wicker Park hosts a Historic Park and Garden Tour with the property at 1512 N. Hoyne frequently a featured garden. The 2004 Wicker Park Art and Garden Show guide includes the following in the description for the property: “Our intention for the garden is to make it look like an integral part of the visual flow of the house (i.e., not just a “side lot” with plants on it).” This property is considered by many to be a Protected by the Wicker Park Historic District Designation of 1989. As a greenspace that has been a garden for 140 years it is part of the historic value of the home and neighborhood and contributes to the overall historic value of Wicker Park. Aside from the loss of the peaceful greenspace, the building at 1520 N Hoyne has beautiful architectural features that would be obscured by the proposed building. That home does not employ common brick on the southern façade and the beautiful bay window and other picturesque details of the building will be hidden. Private Space impacts Public Space We need to value private space, it impacts everyone. The responsibility of the city belongs to all of us as stewards. If neighbors or residents don’t carry a responsibility to preserve, protect or to voice concerns about private And public space, then who else will? What remains needs protection 1. The pressure to build upon lots in Historic Districts will continue and increase 1. The lot here although privately owned must be considered in light of local and national advisory guidelines 2. We respectfully ask the Landmarks Staff, The Commissioners, Zoning Board, the owner of 1512 and 1514 Hoyne to consider: a. avoid or minimize adverse affect to adjoining buildings, e.g. the historic Henry Grusendorf House b. avoid or minimize adverse affect to the fabric of neighborhood and streetscape
