Safety Tips For All System Users (Biking)🚲🚲🚲

Biking Safety Tips
🚨Obey all traffic signs and signals.
🚨 Ride with traffic, not against it, including on sidewalks and paths.
🚨 Watch for turning vehicles at intersections and driveways.
🚨 Use hand signals when you plan to turn, slow down, or stop.
🚨 Wear a properly fitted helmet.
🚨 Bicyclists yield to pedestrians on paved trails, slow down on crowded trails.
🚨 Use a white headlight, a red rear light, and bright and reflective clothing when it is dark outside.
🚨 Stay alert when biking and avoid distractions, including talking or texting on your phone or listening to headphones.

The goal of Safe Streets is simple: Reduce traffic crashes, particularly those involving fatalities and serious injuries. Higher travel speeds result in more severe crashes. The messages below represent most of those provided in the Safe Streets the campaign materials.

PUBLIC INFORMATION UPDATE:

**Updated Approximately 10 pm.** Repairs have been completed and water services restored.

Aug. 31, 2026, at Approx. 3 p.m.

**Please be advised that during the scheduled water main connection work, additional complications were identified that require repair. As a result, water service is expected to remain shut off beyond the originally anticipated 5 p.m. restoration time.

Crews are on site and working to complete the necessary repairs. The city will continue to provide updates on the project status, anticipated repair timelines, and available information through the city website and social media channels.

Please be advised that water main connection work is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 31, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wildwood Street between Nine Mile Road and Kenwood Street as part of the City of Oak Park's water main repair and replacement program.
To complete this work, water service in the affected area will be temporarily shut off beginning at 8 a.m. and is expected to be restored by 5 p.m. Residents whose properties are affected by the shutoff are receiving notification letters.
Residents are encouraged to prepare in advance by storing water for household needs and keeping bottled water on hand. During the shutoff, toilets may be flushed by pouring water directly into the bowl.
Following the restoration of service, some residents may notice temporary water discoloration or sediment. This is a common occurrence during water main work and is generally not a cause for concern. If discoloration occurs, run cold water from a bathtub faucet or laundry sink until the water runs clear. Residents should avoid washing clothes until the water has cleared.
To help minimize the possibility of discolored water entering household plumbing, residents are encouraged to avoid using water during the scheduled shutoff period.
We appreciate residents' patience and understanding as these important infrastructure improvements are completed.
