Our boys Bear Den (3rd grade) began work on their Baloo the Builder adventure this evening with a special guest, Dr. Dan, who talked with us about safety in the wood shop and the variety of hand tools that we might consider for our toolboxes. He also gave us a tour of his home wood shop and one of the restoration projects he is working on! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and advice, Dr. Dan!

Talking to Children About COVID-19 (Coronavirus): A Parent Resource

The emergence of COVID-19 underscores the interdependencies of our world and our responsibilities to others. In particular, this pandemic calls us more than ever to uphold our Oath to help other people at all times and to keep ourselves physically fit, mentally awake, and morally straight.

In the interest of safeguarding the most vulnerable members of our society and doing our small part to help contain the outbreak of COVID-19, Pack 16 leadership has decided to suspend all in-person scouting activities. While children appear to be more resistant to the virus, they are nevertheless still at risk and also can serve as carriers to those in our community, especially those who are more vulnerable, including grandparents, elderly neighbors, and anyone whose immune systems are already compromised, whether sick or recovering.

As parents who lead, we can teach important lessons about what really matters to our children in this crisis. We can do our part to help flatten the curve with our leadership. We encourage you to lead, too, by staying home as much as practicable (i.e., social distancing) and by following these best practices:
-Stay home when you feel sick.
-Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
-Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, and wash your hands before and after doing so.
-Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve/elbow, not your hands.
-Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
-Do not share personal items such as cups, water bottles, eating utensils, etc.
-Avoid shaking hands.
-Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.

We also suggest making a point to talk with your kids about this transition. We love this advice from the National Association of School Psychologists:

https://www.nasponline.org/resources-and-publications/resources-and-podcasts/school-climate-safety-and-crisis/health-crisis-resources/talking-to-children-about-covid-19-(coronavirus)-a-parent-resource

Your den leaders will be in touch with their notes on ways your scout can stay engaged and connected with scouting outside of in-person meetings. Pack 16 leadership will follow on with updates as they become available.

While we are deeply disappointed to have to postpone the crossing over ceremony, our Arrow of Light scouts have worked too hard not to receive the recognition they have earned. We look forward to celebrating their achievements the next time we are together. We will also look forward to cake.

In the meantime, please take care of yourselves and your community.

Yours in scouting,
The Pack 16 Parent Committee

This week with our younger boy dens — Lions, Tigers, and Wolves — we talked citizenship and flags. What does it mean to be a good citizen? How do we care for our country’s flag and why is it important? Cool to see our kids and their growing consciousness of how each of them is a part of our greater community!

The Wolf Den kicked off a ten-day Kindness Challenge (to be extended indefinitely, of course!). Day one of the Kindness Challenge accepted and completed! We talked about what it feels like to give and receive kindness, brainstormed ways we can help proliferate kindness in small and big ways, and created bird feeders from ginormous alpine pine cones, sunbutter and birdseed to be kind to our feathered friends as the temperatures start to drop for winter. :)

Our Story

Cub Scout Pack 16, Oak Park, is part of the Twin Lakes District, and a member of Pathway to Adventure Council. Our chartering organization is First United Church. With over 60 registered scouts, cubs include grades K-5 (Lion, Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos, & Arrow of Light). In 2018 Pack 16 became an early adopter of the new 'Lions' program for Kindergartners. Pack 16 is also the Districts only eligible early adopter for GIRLS in scouting. Now the entire family can register and participate in the Cub Scout program! Don’t worry, we have girls who choose to do both Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts- more Scouting is always better! We are accepting registrations for girls now who are between Kindergarten and 5th grades. Our monthly Pack Meetings are held the fourth Monday evening of each month (August/September through June) at First United Church of Oak Park. Pack 16 was founded on a platform of equality in scouting, leaders and parents.
