This Teen Is Being Pushed To Wed Because Of The Pandemic. Her School Helps Her Resist

In India, girls are encountering additional obstacles to educational attainment, such as family pressure to wed, as a result of the pandemic. Stories like these highlight the need for continuing support for local NGOs that are working to keep girls in school during this unprecedented time. #girlseducation

She's one of 110 girls in a boarding program run by the Veerni Institute in India. When lockdowns hit, they were sent home to their villages, where child marriage is rampant.

It’s inspiring and humbling to see the generosity of the 2021 graduating class at the Center for Community and Global Health at Loyola University Chicago donate $500 to IDS in support of our COVID relief efforts in India for the most vulnerable populations.

The IDS Board sincerely appreciates this kind gesture to forego their physical awards to support this noble cause. May this be an inspiration for others to contribute and support those that are less fortunate and struggling in the midst of the worldwide pandemic.

The unprecedented COVID crisis engulfing India has raised deep concerns across the globe including the US. Having done a successful COVID Relief fund-raising campaign during the first wave of COVID in 2020, India Development Service (IDS) is initiating another fund-raising campaign.
Here is an excerpt from one of our NGO partners, AVANI in Maharashtra highlighting the ground realities:

"The waste pickers have totally lost their livelihood because their living conditions are hand to mouth. The police beat them if they attempt to collect waste plastic on the roads during the lockdown. Their houses are very small and most of them have no access to electricity. So, staying in the house the whole day in 95+ degree temperatures becomes very hard on them. More than the covid infection, the waste pickers are dying from hunger where even the children are more victims to these conditions."

While we are constantly evaluating the kind relief efforts that are needed at the grass-roots level to help the marginalized people that are likely getting neglected with the overwhelming crisis, below is our initial list that we are planning to provide to FCRA qualified NGO partners in India:

- 20 Oxygen concentrators at a cost of $600, delivered all the way to India (total cost of $12,000)
- 200 pulse oximeters at cost of $15, delivered all the way to India (total cost of $3,000)
- Food/ration kit for $21/month for a family of 4 – initially targeting 1200 families (total cost $25,200)

We cannot carry out such a relief effort without your support and trust.
Please kindly send your donations directly to
IDS,

or

No amount of donation is big or small. It all adds up to make a huge impact especially today when the need at every level is so deep and wide. If you wish to direct your donation specifically to any of the above relief efforts, please let us know.

Sincerely,

IDS Board

Youth have the potential to be critical thinkers, change-makers, innovators and great leaders. If given the opportunity, support and space, they can make a tremendous impact on the world making it a better place to live. With the support of IDS’s grant, we could develop leadership among the youth and educators and encouraged active citizenship among them by equipping youths with the skills, knowledge and confidence in their abilities. They are now the advocates of quality education, gender equality and conflict management. A 4-day residential workshop with the participants over conflict handling modes gave an intensive understanding of the importance of managing the conflicts and responding styles to maintain peace in everyday life. We are very grateful for the support extended by IDS to transform the lives of the young people belonging from rural Udaipur which lies in the Indian subcontinent. Thank you C*C and Pravah for all their love, mentoring and support during the whole journey :)
