According to City & State, a former senior adviser for Rep. Adriano Espaillat made racist comments about Darializa Avila Chevalier, Espaillat’s primary challenger.

Rusking Pimentel, who is currently on unpaid leave from Espaillat’s congressional office, claimed in Spanish language media that Darializa and Mayor Zohran Mamdani want to change Washington Heights from a Dominican community into a Haitian and Muslim community.

Darializa is Afro-Dominican and Muslim. Pimentel is saying without evidence that she and Mamdani want to replace Dominicans in Washington Heights with Muslims and Haitians.

There is a long and documented history of anti-Haitian racism in Dominican politics often called anti-Haitianism or “antihaitianismo.”

According to City & State, Espaillat has benefited from millions in outside spending, including support from BOLD America, Latino Victory Fund, AFT Solidarity, and other super PACs. City & State also reported that AIPAC directed more than $145,000 in individual contributions to Espaillat’s campaign this cycle.

The American Prospect reported that AIPAC’s super PAC, United Democracy Project, gave $650,000 to BOLD America, a super PAC backing Espaillat and opposing Darializa.

According to Track AIPAC’s latest figures, pro-Israel PACs have spent $3,255,652 in support of Espaillat. That includes $363,617 in donations and $2,892,035 in independent expenditures.
