Starting: Tuesday, April 28, 2026, through Friday, May 1, 2026,
• Residents will see and hear low-flying aircraft during the training period with a heavy concentration over the southeast area of Lake California.

The two-week academy, sponsored by CAL FIRE and held jointly with the U.S. Forest Service - Shasta-Trinity National Forest Service, prepares trainees to direct aerial firefighting operations as an Air Tactical Group Supervisor.
The program offers a blend of classroom learning, flight simulator sessions, and orientation flights in Sacramento during week one.

Week two focuses on scenario-based training flights in Redding.
Multiple air tankers and helicopters, smokejumpers, and an interdependent training for airtanker base personnel will be a part of the complex scenarios flown in week two. Annual training for pilots and crews includes trainees from CAL FIRE and Forest Services employees.

Redding, CA – The CAL FIRE Shasta-Trinity Unit will be conducting a Vegetation Management Project (VMP) starting on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, and continuing through Thursday, September 26, 2024. The VMP will take place at Swede Creek Ranch, southwest of Oak Run proper.
What to Expect:
During this period, residents and visitors in the area can expect to see emergency personnel, equipment, and air resources actively engaged in operations during the day and into the evening. The prescribed burns will be visible from the project locations, and smoke may be present both during the day and overnight. The CAL FIRE Shasta-Trinity Unit appreciates the public’s cooperation and understanding during these critical operations.
VMP Project Details:
The project will be conducted when weather conditions are optimal, ensuring control, limiting escape, and minimizing poor air quality. In the event of adverse weather or other fire activity that indicates the project cannot be conducted safely, it will be rescheduled. This VMP project aims to reduce non-native grasses and brush, remove dead and downed trees, enhance grazing habitat for livestock and wildlife, and improve the watershed. It also reduces fire hazards and risks by creating breaks in horizontal and vertical fuel continuity, which can modify future wildfire behavior and enhance community protection.
Strategic Efforts:
This VMP project is part of broader strategic efforts to protect the local community and nearby natural resources. Plans are based on input from the community and local stakeholders, with collaboration from various partners throughout the project. This work contributes to significant ongoing efforts statewide, helping California meet or exceed its fuels reduction goals outlined in the California Fire Plan and the California Wildfire and Forest Resilience Action Plan.
