The number one source of Home Fires? Your Kitchen. Cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires and injuries in North Carolina. Not faulty wiring. Not old smoke alarms. Your stove!

Here's the scary part: Most cooking fires happen in seconds. And most are preventable.

✅ Never leave cooking unattended: Not even to check on something else. If you leave the kitchen, turn off the stove.
✅ Keep flammable items away: Towels, curtains, paper, packaging. All belong far from the stove.
✅ Turn pot handles inward: Keep them from being bumped or grabbed by children.
✅ If a grease fire starts, DON'T use water: Use a fire extinguisher or cover the pan with a metal lid to smother it.

For renters and apartment residents: Discuss fire safety with your landlord. Know the locations of extinguishers and familiarize yourself with escape routes. Your kitchen is the heart of your home, so keep it safe! 🔥

🌊 Did you know that nearly 2/3 of all swimming-related fatalities occur between May and August? NC OSFM wants to remind everyone that drowning can be prevented. Prevention begins with knowledge and preparation. Whether you are a parent, educator, or coach, these essential water safety tips are crucial for everyone.

Remember to:

✅ Always supervise. Full attention is necessary at all times. Drowning can occur silently and swiftly. Appoint one adult as the designated "water watcher" when in groups.

✅ Learn CPR. Firefighters and first responders encourage everyone to enroll in a CPR class. Visit ncosfm.gov for certification resources and local training opportunities.

✅ Choose Coast Guard-approved life jackets. Floaties and inflatable devices are not appropriate substitutes for proper safety equipment. Quality life jackets save lives.

✅ Obtain proper swim instruction. Swimming lessons from certified instructors provide vital survival skills that go beyond basic comfort in water.

✅ Be aware of drowning indicators. Drowning often happens quietly. Look for signs such as struggling to stay above water, inability to call for help, signs of panic, or submersion without making a sound.

Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional fatalities among children aged 1-4 in North Carolina, impacting families across all communities.
