At approximately 1745hrs, members were on Station preparing for our upcoming QRS recertification when one of the firefighters noticed a male walking in the apparatus area inside our station.

Deputy Chief Toth went out to greet the male and was handed an infant. Immediately recognizing the child was choking, Deputy Toth administered back blows initially clearing some of the obstruction while he summoned help from Lieutenant Paramedic Pilewski who administered additional back blows finally allowing the baby's color to return and breathing to become normal.

While the Deputy and Lieutenant were tending to the patient, Lieutenant Spencer contacted 911 for an ambulance response to our station. As of the writing of this, the baby is doing just fine.

The parents, originally headed to Children's by private means, made a decision to stop at the station for assistance. We are grateful that our fire department is staffed, not only by paid township fire inspectors during daylight hours, but live-ins and volunteer staffers as well.

While bringing your emergency to a volunteer station is not ideal, as there is no guarantee of help being there, it is becoming increasily obvious that the public expects help when they come to the fire station, and we are glad to have been there once again.

If this sounds familiar to you it's because on August 4th, 2025 our firefighters saved a different choking baby. 1 year and 6 days ago.

Call #666

At 0455hrs station 209 and Mutual Aid were dispatched for a reported fire at the Burger King on Home Drive in the Pointe @ North Fayette. 245 Rescue and Chief were the first arriving units. 245 rescue assumed 1st due engine responsibilities and 245 Chief established command. 245 rescue stretched a line to the Charlie side roof. 209 Engine arrived about a minute later and stretched a line to the kitchen for extinguishment and overhaul. 209 Chief arrived shortly after and, after a face to face, held command throughout the incident.

Mutual aid truck companies laddered the structure and assisted with overhaul and ventilation. The fire was quickly brought under control and the Incident was held to units in scene.

In all, no injuries were reported. Units operated on scene for about an hour.

Thank you to our mutual aid partners for the early morning assist.

The Allegheny County Fire Marshall's office is investigating.

The North Fayette Township Volunteer Fire Department has officially begun its annual fund drive campaign.

As a volunteer organization, we rely on the generous support of our residents and businesses to help fund equipment, training, maintenance, and operational expenses that are essential to providing emergency services to our community.

This year, donation requests are being mailed throughout the township. If you receive a letter, we respectfully ask that you consider supporting our department. Every contribution, regardless of size, helps ensure our firefighters have the resources needed to respond when called upon.

Guys, you're not going to believe what our second call of the Month was!

One of our firefighters, Matt Kline, was headed to Home Depot at the Pointe @ North Fayette for a home improvement project at his house when he noticed a frantic looking mother duck walking back and forth in the area of the Storm grate on home drive. Matt quickly investigated and saw ducklings at the bottom of the drain and requested assistance via our internal chat, while assistance was enroute the Klines started their own rescue efforts.

5 ducklings in total were rescued, two prior to FD equipment's arrival by the Klines and 3 with the help of the Fire Department. The 5th and final rescuee was about 30 feet down the drain pipe leading to another catch basin and had to be flushed out using water from an engine.

All ducklings were reunited with mom who stood by calmly as firefighters worked on extrication.

These calls not only help animals in distress, but are good for us as they often require us to stretch our brains in thinking outside of the box when it comes to tools available to us on our rescue truck to achieve goals beyond cutting an accident victim out of a car or putting a fire out, and all in a low stress environment.

Our first call in the month of August was a service assist for a baby deer stuck in the vertical slats of a deck railing. Rescue crews removed the slat, without causing damage, and removed the deer. After taking a few seconds to catch its breath, the deer ran off into the woods. The slat was then reinstalled by the FD.

Our operational leadership has put an emphasis on transparency as we move forward and make changes. Change always comes with a bit of uneasiness and making these public might help quell some of that uneasiness. One of the primary areas we have changed is tweaking our run cards, these cards determine what departments are automatically dispatched to calls of varying nature in the Township.

These cards were determined by prioritizing staffed/capable fire departments, while also considering that the closest appropriate departments are dispatched on initial alarms. With the uncertain availability of volunteers in the volunteer fire service, the responses are "right sized" to add more in an effort to get more qualified personnel on scene to assist in emergencies faster and perform more efficiently while managing risk to firefighters on scene by limiting fatigue and overwork.

Automatic transfers will be utilized to get resources closer so that, in the event an additional alarm is required, appropriate/capable resources are quickly available. This is necessary due to the sheer size of our Township.

There will be instances where you will see a neighboring department arrive first on scene, simply put, they may be physically closer to the emergency, and this is a good problem to have. These departments are just as capable and we will jump in where we need to upon our arrival. We all work together very well to work the problems we're dispatched to.

We hope to never meet you outside of a firehouse visit but if we do meet, you can rest assured knowing you're in very good hands no matter where in the Township we meet.

Training tonight consisted of rescuing an incapacitated patient from a roof, simulating an electrical shock or a medical emergency such as heat stroke or heart attack.

North Fayette is growing by the day and with building construction comes potential for rescue situations. With this heat wave we're experiencing, and the few times this has been needed recently in the Pittsburgh area, this is a likely scenario we may find ourselves in at any given time.

Crews positioned the Ladder truck, deployed a stokes basket, secured the patient and removed the patient from the roof and lowered directly into the hands of EMS. The group also discussed a myriad methods and situations for various roof types and ladder truck designs.

Call #5 for the day, #587 on the year

209 had just cleared a brush fire on Azalea Dr in the Township when we were alerted to a wood chipper fire in the new Blackstone housing plan where land clearing crews were working to clear land for the new phase of Blackstone. The large tracked wood chipper experienced a hydraulic line rupture which spewed hydraulic oil all over the hot engine, resulting in a fire.

Understanding that 215 was likely still on the air from providing mutual aid on the previous call, 209 Attack added 215 to assist with the fire. Units operated for a little over an hour.
