Another piece of OA history made it back into the halls of 1 North Pearl St. Keith Gilbert stopped by my office this past week with this gem and a great story behind it.
When the final move out of the old school took place, current high school students were hired to do some of the moving of items to the new school. Keith was one of them. He said local parents and farmers chipped in with pick up trucks, farm trucks and trailers.
Along with getting a few bucks, each student could pick out one thing to keep and Keith grabbed an old Chemistry set. It was in a wooden box complete with beakers, test tubes, Bunsen Burners, etc..
Through the years various pieces broke or came up missing and the pictured Bunsen Burner is the last surviving piece from the set.
The accompanying photo displayed outside of apartment 304, where the Chemistry room was located is from a 1940's era Oracle.
That very piece of equipment could be in the picture!
Thank you Keith for the piece of history and some more Oracles to add to in-house collection.

Next time you are enjoying a great meal at Caryville Inn, check out this piece of local history. The photo of the old Oakfield High School from 1947 is framed in one of the original classroom door transoms from 1926.
It is placed next to a historical photo of the Cary Seminary which occupied the space where the old high school and now School House Manor stands.
Thank you Caryville Inn for all you do for our community.

The latest Fire Hose Cabinet Display. This one is on the third floor and was inspired by a postcard from the early 1950's (borrowed from the Oakfield Historical Society). In the original postcard (on the right in the cabinet) are two 1950's era cars are parked out front. The picture on the left is a recreation using current tenant George's 1951 Chevrolet Deluxe, you can see George smiling behind the wheel!
George asked if the rest of the cabinet could be a nod to Oakfield agriculture since he was a member of FFA (Future Farmers of America) during his time at Oakfield High School. The second picture is George in an FFA Oracle photo. Tenants who were students at the old Oakfield High School have a class picture from the Oracle hung outside their door.
Along with the car pictures and honoring some of Oakfield's rich agricultural roots are a Blue Boy Green Beans label and local Dairy milk bottles. From left to right are: GT Lesso Dairy, Oakfield Dairy, the US Gypsum Employee Dairy, and Elland Dairy

A couple more projects completed. This fire hose cabinet, located on the third floor, contains various items found at the school as well as some donated by one of our tenants who is a collector. I specifically chose this cabinet as it is right in front of her apartment so she can enjoy them every time she steps out. It contains various pieces of local glass from the region among other little treasures.
The globes on the wall sconces were recently found among a bunch of globes and glassware I had stashed prior to renovation. They are the last remaining frosted globes from the original auditorium. A picture of the auditorium in 1926 shows the sconces and globes when new. They are now mounted on the wall panels from the original Kindergarten Room now moved to the Main Office. The hope is to eventually wire them and have them lit.

There are 10 Fire Hose cabinets in the halls of the school that were left as is through the renovation. After some heavy cleaning and paint, they make perfect display cases. This is the first completed one.
It features a mix of school and local history.
The photo is of a prom in the decorated gymnasium circa 1940's. There is a chunk of raw gypsum and a US Gyp post card from yesteryear. A vintage storybook found in the basement, a matchbook from Darch's Furniture Store (occupied the building prior to the 1980 conversion to apartments), a BlueBoy can label, and a receipt book and advertising ruler from Thompson's Food Market on Main St.

Just a fun little side project. None of the teachers desks or chairs were left behind from the original school but a couple of years of scouring FB Marketplace yielded these two bentwood chairs and an identical oak teachers desk. The bottom photo is the Kindergarten Room in 1926.
In the top photo, the desk lamp(maybe 1940's?) and books were left in the building.
These are in a small conference room off the Main Office.

Started 2025 with our first School House Manor "Neighborhood Block Party".
Homemade Lasagna, Traditional and Chicken Alfredo Lasagna, Salad by Sally, and amazing Coconut Angel Food by Rhenda.
Thank you to The Oak Church for letting us borrow plates and silverware so we didn't have to dine with paper and plastic!
Great food and fellowship with neighbors getting to know each other better.

Some more repurposed pieces of the past. First is an original closet door from the classrooms fitted with additional original door hardware, polished and now used as a coat rack.
Second is the old Public Address system, found buried under the stage, retrofitted with the DVR for the camera system. The toggle switches are still labeled. Most are labeled with room numbers. The Gym and Aud are obvious. Not sure what the first one is, any ideas?

After 52 years, the auditorium was alive with music again tonight as The Oakfield Community Bible Church came and held a holiday carol sing along with the tenants complete with cookies and goodie bags.
It has been a wonderful December of generosity that started with The Oakfield Lions Club distributing Holiday Gift Bags to all of our residents.
Then The Goose and Pam C. organized a crew of area crochet artists who hand knitted blankets for all. Every tenant received a beautiful handmade afghan crocheted by volunteers from all over Genesee County.
Thank you to a generous community for thinking of our School House Manor neighborhood!
