This morning, our hearts, prayers, and deepest condolences are with the family of Boston Fire Department Firefighter Robert Kilduff Jr., and with his brothers and sisters of Rescue Company 2 and the entire Boston Fire Department. You've changed your clocks ... but have you checked your alarms? This is a great time to check the manufacturing date on the back of your smoke and CO alarms.

should be replaced after 10 years, and alarms should be replaced after 5, 7, or 10 years depending on the make and model. If they're still in their useful lifespan, replace the alkaline batteries in alarms that use them.

If not, choose replacements with a sealed, long-life battery from a well-known national brand with the mark of an independent testing lab like UL or Intertek/ETL. Smoke alarms that meet UL Standard 217, 8th edition or later, use the latest multi-criteria technology to reduce nuisance alarms caused by cooking smoke.
