As you know, we've been working through the vast collection of Edwin Sherman's belongings. Analyzing the array of clippings, photographs, and letters, he was undoubtedly a man of far-reaching influence; he had powerful connections and friends everywhere. This is evidenced even in small items such as this invitation to an exclusive reception to President William Taft, who visited the shores of Oakland's Lake Merritt for a special presentation to the student body of UC Berkeley. (For details of the event: https://localwiki.org/oakland/Presidential_Visits_to_Oakland).

There is an additional invitation—this time from US Navy Rear Admiral Bowman H. McCalla inviting Sherman to the famous St. Peter's Chapel on Mare Island in Vallejo for a 1904 unveiling of a plaque honoring the sailors who perished during the First Samoan Civil War in 1898. According to his Wikipedia biography, McCalla was "noted for his roles during the Spanish-American War and putting down the Boxer Rebellion." (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowman_H._McCalla)

Our Executive Director is archiving the personal papers and effects of Major Edwin A. Sherman, 33*, GC. In addition to being an American pioneer in California, Sherman was one of the movers and shakers of the fraternity in the state, especially the Scottish Rite.

One of Sherman's hallmark characteristics was an abiding devotion to the Union and President Lincoln—so much so that he devoted much of his time to preserving Lincoln's legacy. His collection is rife with Lincoln memorabilia, including this recently rediscovered April 15, 1865 edition of the New York Herald announcing Lincoln's assassination.

THE PERSONAL LIFE OF A PIONEER

As mentioned in earlier posts, Edwin Allen Sherman (1829-1914) was the primary mover and shaker of the Valley of Oakland. An American pioneer in California and veteran of the Mexican-American War, he was a tireless promoter of the Rite throughout the West Coast and even founded his own fraternal orders. Although he was sometimes controversial and could be perceived as curmudgeonly, he was undoubtedly a doer and somebody only the nineteenth century could have produced. Indeed, California Freemasonry owes quite a bit to Sherman's efforts.

I've been re-housing his archive within the famous trunk described in Jay Kinney's excellent "Tales From a Trunk: Edwin A. Sherman, a Masonic Whirlwind" (Heredom Vol. 12, 2004). Sherman's personal effects reveal much about mid-nineteenth-century California and how individuals reacted to this topsy-turvy world. We are also treated to glimpses of his personal life, giving our subject even more depth.

Sherman was an artist. As seen on this page, he contributed illustrated escutcheons for the Valley of Oakland's Gethsemane Chapter Rose Croix and illustrated and calligraphed several of his certificates. Nevertheless, these items, while personal, were still a part of his (personal) fraternal life. The following marriage certificate, however, displays his pride in his family while still showing his identity as a prominent Mason. It announces his union to his wife, Addie (née Dodd), and includes photographs of the couple and children as well as the witnesses to their union.

This heartfelt personal item speaks to Sherman's devotion to his family and fraternity while displaying his contribution to the Craft's artistic heritage.

Thanks to some kind donations, we've been able to increase our stock of preservation-quality housing for our treasures. I know that boxes, folders, and backings don't sound thrilling, but they are a part of the foundation of caring for a collection!

Ninety-seven years ago, on June 11, 1927, the Grand Lodge of F. & A.M. of California conducted a cornerstone laying ceremony for the Oakland Scottish Rite Temple. Six months later, on December 5, 1927 the first stated meeting was held, and seven days later on December 12, the building was dedicated following a grand parade, and finishing with a four-day (Dec. 13–16) Scottish Rite Reunion, where the degrees of the Rite were conferred.

Infomation and photograph from California’s First Century of Scottish Rite Masonry, ed. Arthur Andersen, Leon O. Whitsell (Oakland, CA), 63–64.

A FUTURE THAT NEVER WAS

In early 1927, there was a campaign to build a new $2,500,000 Masonic temple in Oakland. It would be located on Harrison, between 12th and 13th streets. The inspiration was the Detroit Temple.

Surplus funds would go to pay for the construction of the Masonic Hospital for Crippled Children.

Below are excerpts from the fundraising literature.

WALK LIKE AN EGYPTIAN

The discovery of King Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922 transfixed the world. A wave of “Egyptomania” inspired Egyptian-themed products, art, film, and theater. Fraternal organizations led by Freemasonry were similarly impacted. The appeal of their degrees and histories, already believed to be inspired by ancient lore or inherited from a distant civilization, increased during this period.

These photographs are evidence of this cultural trend, showing the Egyptian/Biblically-themed play, “Pharaoh’s Daughter,” performed at the Oakland Scottish Rite Auditorium on January 13, 1936. This play featured several local community actors, such as UC Berkeley actress Alice Dickie; Fremont High School dramatic director Beatrice Burnett; and Dorothy Bonar, dramatics director for the Oakland Recreation Department.

These were properly scanned so we can finally regard the fantastic details and the faces of the cast for the first time! Here are some highlights. The originals are 8 x 10, so much fine detail was lost to the naked eye.
