On Saturday, January 20th I will be the Keynote Speaker at the Capacity, Allyship, Resilience, Equity (C.A.R.E) Symposium hosted by .

January is Human Trafficking Prevention Month and this event is part of the Anti Trafficking Movement.

As a city, we are working to address the alarming number of missing Black adults and youth, and the plague of human trafficking. Last year I brought the “Ebony Alert” resolution in support of SB 673 (Bradford) to our City Council in partnership with a broad coalition of community groups. This month, the Ebony Alert law went into effect making California the first state to have an emergency alert system that notifies the public of missing Black youth and women ages 12 to 25. Additionally, on January 16th, I will be bringing forth a resolution to the City Council uplifting January 2024 and National Slavery and Human Trafficking Awareness Month in the City of Oakland.

I currently serve on the Mayor’s Advisory Council for Human Trafficking and will continue to prioritize and lead out with community partners advocating and supporting an end to human trafficking.

Please join me at the C.A.R.E Symposium to connect and learn more about how to end human trafficking. This event is free to the public. Visit https://www.asistastouch.org/caresym to register.

PRAYING FOR OAKLAND

Today we pray for our city and uphold the family of the fallen OPD officer who lost his life in the line of duty.

May God surround His family with supernatural peace and comfort.

We pray for a move of God in the City of Oakland and Bay Area that transforms hearts and stops violence in our streets, and that God would heal our city.

May God strengthen and uphold every police officer daily. May He place a shield of protection around each one.

John 15:13 Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.

Praying for Oakland Police Department Officer Le’s family, friends, City of Oakland colleagues and so many grieving his tragic and devastating loss.💔🙏🏾💙

In Loving Memory of Officer Tuan Le

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Officer Tuan Le, a dedicated public servant, loving husband, and a cherished member of the Oakland community. Officer Le was killed in the line of duty today, December 29, 2023, at 8:44 a.m. Officer Le was surrounded by his wife, mother, and members of his OPD family when he died.

On June 1, 1987, Officer Le was born in Saigon Vietnam, before later moving to Oakland and being naturalized on September 11, 2001.

On February 21, 2020, Officer Le graduated from the 183rd Police Academy, beginning a journey of public service to his community that lasted nearly four years.

For the past two years, Officer Le served as the Community Resource Officer (CRO) in West Oakland, where he devoted himself to strengthening the bond between law enforcement and the residents of Oakland. His tireless efforts in fostering positive relationships made a lasting impact.

Officer Le was a devoted husband to his wife. His passing leaves a void in the law enforcement community, the city of Oakland, and in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be remembered for his kindness, his smile, and the positive change he brought to the lives of those around him. He is a true hero who dedicated his life to making our community safer.

Officer Le is the 54th Oakland Police Officer killed in the line of duty serving the residents of Oakland.

Truly heartbroken by the tragic loss of one of our officers. 😪💔🙏🏾

Our community is heartbroken over the loss of the amazing Shantell Herndon. I send my love, prayers, and condolences to her family, friends, and Sorors🔺. Shantell was a mother of three children, a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and an active member in the NAACP, and the Eastern Star.

Shantell was a Brooklyn Native and lived in California for over 20 years. During her time in Oakland, she made a profound impact on the community. As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, she specialized in working with mental health, substance abuse, dual-diagnosis, victims of violence, perpetrators of crime, homelessness and intergenerational traumas.

This year, I had the opportunity of partnering with Shantell as she launched “F.L.Y Girl Therapy” to support women impacted by trauma in Oakland.
We honor her legacy and lasting impact on Oakland and beyond. May our phenomenal Forever F.L.Y Grl Rest in Peace.

We want to take a moment to recognize two of our amazing community leaders that we recognized for Hispanic Heritage Month and Native American Heritage Month!

Last month we honored Diego Gonzalez for National Hispanic Heritage Month. Diego currently serves as the Acting Government Affairs Manager at the Port of Oakland, leading efforts across three critical port business lines – Maritime, Commercial Real Estate, and Aviation and represents affairs of the Oakland International Airport which is situated in District 7. In his role, Diego works to enhance the quality of the Port’s relationships with elected officials, business partners, trade associations, government agencies and community stakeholders

This month we honor Yvonne Marshall for Native American Heritage Month. Yvonne has served as a social worker with several Bay Area Native American agencies, such as the American Indian Child Resource Center, the Oakland and San Francisco Friendship House Association of American Indians, and the Oakland and San Francisco Native American Health Center. currently, Yvonne serves as a Cultural Programs Manager at the Intertribal Friendship House (IFH) in Oakland, CA, which began in 1955 in response to many Native Americans relocating to the Bay Area, commonly known as the “Urban Rez.”

We thank our community leaders in District 7 for contributing to the cultural fabric and legacy of our city!
