Lake Merritt Dog Park (a.k.a. Lakeview Dog Play Area)

Lake Merritt Dog Park (a.k.a. Lakeview Dog Play Area) This was the PROPOSED dog play area for Lake Merritt. We're keeping the page active for outreach on dog parks in Oakland and dog ownership. We, the dog owners and lovers of Oakland, support all varieties of dog parks, big and small, and we know that with the ban on dogs in most Oakland parks, every off-leash area is extremely important.
(1)

The Lakeview Dog Play Area needs your support. Send an email in the next 24 hours to convince the city that dog owners deserve space in this neighborhood. We’ve made it extremely simple to send a note of support with our form letter: http://www.emailmeform.com/builder/form/iK0Af4f29x1L45I084b1O You can use it as-is, or use our talking point to write your own letter. Talking Points: Dog play area provides social space for people with dogs. Dog play area approved in Lake Merritt Master Plan and by the Parks Commission (2006 and 2010). Proposed plan gives us a legal space to go with our dogs. This busy neighborhood needs this amenity so we don’t have to drive to Alameda and Berkeley every day. The multi-use park has room for dogs, kids, soccer and more. *Want to help spread the word? Download a flyer or petition from our Google Docs folder! http://bit.ly/MXpNPZ

With the Independence Day Holiday this weekend, there will be lots of fireworks continuing. We know it's stressful for both humans and pets - here are some tips to keep your pets as safe as possible. There are also some great recommendations from the Veterinary Information Network in the attached graphic

- Isolate pets indoors at home; they will be happier and not tempted to try to get away during loud sounds.
- If your dog is crate trained, put her in a crate covered with a blanket to make her feel more secure.
- Create a peaceful environment in your home, play soothing music and lower the blinds to block outside sights and sounds. If your pet seems anxious, spend time with her soothing him with a calm voice.
- Even if your pet is indoors with you, double-check yard gates and doors to make sure that pets cannot escape.
- Make certain pets are wearing identification, including the name and current telephone number of the owner. Confirm that your pet’s microchip registration information is registered or updated.

Update May 30:

Oakland’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Youth Development, Department of Public Works, and Oakland Animal Services have collaborated on the decision to temporarily close the Morcom Rose Garden. The City is aware of and is taking seriously several incidents of attacks by a male turkey in the park and considers this a public safety concern.

Wildlife is regulated by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW). CDFW has denied the City’s request to relocate the turkey, indicating that is not a solution, nor allowed by State law. The City has reported to CDFW the incidents of attacks on humans.

Currently, the City has been instructed by CDFW to keep the park closed, to prevent feeding of wildlife, and to attempt to train the turkey to keep distance from humans. We have been advised this will only work if all feeding of the turkeys and other wildlife stops completely.

It is hoped that visitors can return to the Rose Garden soon. The City will continue to abide by California State law and will follow CDFW instructions regarding when the park may reopen.

Posted May 23:

Oakland’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Youth Development has temporarily closed the Morcom Rose Garden to provide some time and space to work to prevent human – wildlife conflicts. We understand there is a family of turkeys in the park and the male has become aggressive toward humans. We also understand that some humans have been feeding the birds regularly in the park.

Out of concern for the public safety and the turkeys’ well-being, Oakland Animal Services, working closely with the Parks Department, has contacted the California Department of Fish and Wildlife for guidance and support.

Following the State’s Keep Me Wild campaign (https://wildlife.ca.gov/Keep-Me-Wild/Wild-Turkey), the City is asking people to please stay out of the park, to respect the prohibition against walking dogs in the park, and to never feed wildlife of any type. In the meanwhile, Oakland Animal Services will work with the Department of Fish and Wildlife on opportunities to help retrain the turkeys and will work to educate our residents.

As has been seen across the globe, the retreat of humans as they shelter in place has led to an increase in the visibility of wildlife in urban areas. The City of Oakland respects the rights of wild animals to inhabit their natural homes and encourages all Oaklanders to support the right of our wild residents to remain wild.

There are some incredible artists among the amazing volunteers who make the day-to-day operations of OAS possible. And there are many more who, let's face it, should probably keep their day jobs. This erratic team has joined forces for a fabulous new fundraiser for FOAS. For a donation of just $25, you'll get an original portrait of your pet by a possibly-talented OAS volunteer. So set your bar nice and low, and support FOAS with a gift of $25 or more today! There is no limit to the number you can purchase!

Get Your, ah, Unique Pet Portrait
1. Make an online gift of $25 (or more) to FOAS at oaklandsanimals.org/donate. Your gift must be made between Tuesday, March 10 and Monday, March 16, 2020.
2. Forward your donation receipt to [email protected], along with a photo of your pet (one photo per donation).
3. By March 31, you will receive your one-of-a-kind pet portrait--and prepare to tell your friends that they just don't understand modern art. Art will be delivered electronically; for a gift of $50 or more, we'll mail you a hard copy of your pet portrait (please provide your mailing address).

Our marginally-talented OAS artists are standing by! Make your gift to FOAS today! (Shout out to Wisconsin Humane Society and BARCS Animal Shelter for this amazing fundraiser idea that we shamelessly stole)

GREAT MOM: This stray and pregnant dog was found wandering the streets of Oakland. Residents were worried she was going to get hit by a car. That's when volunteers with a rescue group jumped in to help, and ended up getting the dog safely to shelter. Much to their delight, "Waltzing Matilda," gave birth to seven puppies on Valentine’s Day. http://bit.ly/37CniCV
