Will California schools offer free lunches for all students? | CalMatters

“Hungry children can’t learn. Whenever your belly is growling, you’re not learning, ” said Laura Howe, Nutrition Services Supervisor at the Manteca Unified School District. We agree and that's why we are encouraged and supportive of the State Legislature's proposal to permanently fund universally-free meals statewide. The proposed $650 million annual investment would make California public school students the first in the nation to benefit from comprehensive free school meals. As noted in this CalMatters.org article, this will encourage public school districts to participate in programs that allow high-poverty schools to provide meals to all students without requiring applications. That approach removes the stigma sometimes associated with school meals, another barrier to access.

Legislators want to spend $650 million a year to continue free meals for all students. The proposal will be decided in budget talks.

California needs to offer free meals to all students | CalMatters

This week, the California Legislature proposed fully funding universally-free school meals for all California school kids. This historic proposed investment means all schools could serve free breakfast and lunch, connecting millions of children with the nutritious meals they need. By fully maximizing a federal option known as the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), the state would leverage more than $1 billion in federal funds to provide California kids the nutrition they need to learn, grow and thrive.

Mayra Alavarez, president of the The Children's Partnership, calls on California leaders to seize this moment. Read more about why the Legislature's proposal means now is the time to maximize CEP as a smart way to leverage federal support to help communities across California. https://bit.ly/3yzJc8u

Lawmakers Consider Food Assistance for Undocumented Californians

Shout out to Benyamin Chao from California Immigrant Policy Center for sharing their story for this piece on #Food4All.

"Benyamin Chao, health and public benefits campaign coordinator for the California Immigrant Policy Center, who came to the U.S. as a child from Brunei, said it was very hard for his mom, raising four kids on her own, to feed her family since she didn't qualify for benefits.

"It put a huge burden on my mom to work extra hours under the table, or working as a caregiver," Chao recounted. "It put a huge strain on her health, because she had to work 12 hours a day, seven days a week."
