Talking Transition is civic engagement initiative that also serves as a youth jobs program by hiring Youth Data Fellows (aged 16 - 24) to survey under-represented Oakland communities about critical issues like housing, community safety, and economic development. The Youth Data Fellows are paid a fair wage of $22.35/hr in a program funded by private philanthropy, not Oakland taxpayers.

After spending weeks door knocking and surveying Oakland residents to gather insights that would shape the agenda of the Thao administration, the Youth Data Fellows wanted to attend the Mayor's State of the City address and they attended as members of the Oakland public.

We all want a safe city for ourselves and our families. Right now, Oakland is suffering after decades of community disinvestment compounded by an unprecedented pandemic. Lack of access to housing, healthcare, and economic opportunity has created these conditions of rising crime. While the Right is exploiting these conditions to grow a hateful movement that would double down on failed policies like militarized policing and mass incarceration, we know that what keeps us safe is deep investment in prevention services and programs as the center of a robust, holistic set of public safety solutions.

A recent poll by the McConnell group showed that Oaklanders overwhelmingly support the idea of putting “more resources into youth mentoring programs and creating skills centers and jobs so youth have alternatives to criminal behavior,” with 92% of those polled expressing support for this proposal. This poll, done by a conservative group that works primarily with the real estate industry and business executives, shows that investing more resources into youth jobs programs as a tangible, immediate public safety solution is something all Oaklanders can unite behind.

As we work with Oakland residents to put real solutions into action, we are bringing Urban Peace Movement, a community organization that builds youth leadership in Oakland to transform the culture and social conditions that lead to community violence & mass incarceration in communities of color, as the guest speaker for our October Assembly. Join us for a conversation with UPM organizers and District 3 Councilmember Carroll Fife about how community and City government can work together to make Oakland safer for everyone by investing in young people.

Seneca Scott, founder of Neighbors Together Oakland and executive committee officer of the CA & Oakland NAACP, is once again making violent threats - this time against a 77 year old grandmother who lost her grandson to police violence in 2011.

We all need to speak out against this kind of violent rhetoric in Oakland politics, especially from someone claiming to be a community leader. Sign and share the solidarity statement: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeVvl8TMwt-x8Pj2TAFE2uklcsaLH7eD5Cy8OuF8lOQdzXU2Q/viewform

Join Care 4 Community Action at our upcoming virtual monthly assembly!

The public safety system has enormous consequences on the quality of life for Oakland residents, but have you ever wondered why the public safety system works as it does, and who really is in charge? At this month’s Virtual Assembly, we’ll be learning about how the Oakland public safety system works, making sense of the different players, from the Oakland Police Department, the District Attorney, City Council, and more. We’ll break down who they are, their responsibilities, duties, and powers, to understand what they legally can, and cannot, do. Join us!

Join Care 4 Community Action at our upcoming virtual monthly assembly!

Have you ever encountered a neighbor in psychological distress or medical crisis, and not known what to do or who to call? At this month’s Virtual Assembly, we’ll be learning about the Mobile Assistance Community Responders of Oakland (MACRO), a community response program for non-violent, non-emergency 9-11 calls. The purpose of MACRO is to meet the needs of the community with a compassionate care first response model grounded in empathy, service, and community. MACRO's goal is to reduce responses by emergency services (Fire & Police), resulting in increased access to community-based services and resources for impacted individuals and families, and most especially for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC). Join District 3 Councilmember Carroll Fife for a conversation with MACRO Program Director Elliott Jones to learn about how MACRO came to be and how MACRO services can be accessed. Join us!

🗓SAVE THE DATE for the 9th Annual Reclaim MLK’s Radical Legacy Weekend!

Join us January 13-16, 2023 for a weekend of teach-ins, trainings, film screenings, healing justice workshops, and action in King’s honor as we get ready for a year of solidarity, community and liberation.

Every year at this time we recommit ourselves to the path of revolution and liberation laid out for us by Dr. King and the long lineage of Black freedom fighters who came before us. Not the white-washed, sanitized version of King that the US capitalist state has co-opted and sold back to us, but rather the radical, anti-imperialist, anti-capitalist revolutionary who called for an all out war against poverty.

This year for the first time in 8 years, the People of Oakland can breathe a small sigh of relief. The disastrous Libby Schaaf administration has come to an end. Voters rejected the worst pro-police candidates and elected a progressive-leaning bloc on city council for the first time in memory. And they passed sweeping measures to create affordable housing and tax-the-rich.

But regardless of who’s in office, Dr. King’s legacy of radical direct action teaches us that real change comes from the people. And it’s going to take all of us coming together more unified than ever.

For decades Oakland has been at the vanguard in the fight Black liberation. It’s time we reclaim that distinction. This MLK Day, APTP is proud to unveil our new community resource building, The People’s House, located in the Bottoms in West Oakland, the birthplace of the Black Panthers. We will use it as a hub for Mental Health First, First Responders Committee, the California Healers Network, and all of our survival programs and alternative response models. Our new building will also house phase one of the world’s first abolitionist holistic care clinic for community crises involving mental health, intimate partner violence and substance use. .

Stay tuned for more details as we get closer to the event. See you on King Day Weekend!!

“Measure Q got more votes than any other Oakland ballot measure this year. There is a mandate from Oakland voters to address this housing crisis, and to address it in some non-conventional, untraditional ways. That’s what we’re going to do with Social Housing. That is what we are going to do with the Enhanced Infrastructure Financing District. That is what we’re going to do with the Black New Deal, and so many other things that we are working on in 2023. The opposition, the status quo that’s been in place, that’s calcified around doing things the same way…they don’t expect us to continue to organize and build power. That is what we have to do if we are going to get the transformative shift that is so necessary.” - Carroll Fife, Oakland City Council - D3

“If you’re addicted to social media you’ve probably heard the sentiment, “Go out and touch grass!” Well, I want us to hit the pavement. Because what we’ve learned over the last two years of doing this organizing is that there’s just no substitute for going out and meeting people where they’re at, and cutting through the bu****it, frankly. When we get out and talk to people, we can cut through the disinformation and the echo chambers. We get that feedback from the street, we find out what is really affecting people in our communities, and then we help bring that into the halls of power. We could not do that without you, and we really appreciate your support.”

If you volunteered or if you voted for Measure Q, this victory belongs to YOU! With your support, Measure Q will authorize the City to build 13,000 units of low-income affordable housing.

These victories weren’t won in the mad-dash of the election cycle - Care 4 Community Action organizes Oakland residents to door knock their neighborhoods every week, building community and popular support for housing justice all throughout the year. Through hundreds of front-stoop conversations, a clear consensus emerged: that the only solution to homelessness is housing people can actually afford. District 3 Council Member Carroll Fife,, our champion in City Hall, authored legislation to translate this consensus into policy - and the community voted for it by an overwhelming 80%.

This successful election cycle proved that Care 4 Community Action has created a model that helps neighborhoods organize to create the policy changes they want to see. Now, with over 50 newly engaged volunteers, we need your support to grow our infrastructure so we can build on this momentum and continue to organize an effective movement to make our government more responsive to the community’s needs.

So come celebrate this incredible success at our Victory Party at Kinfolx Coffee/Wine/Culture on Sunday, December 18th from 3-5pm. If you can’t make it, you can still support us by making a donation: https://donate.oaklandc4c.org.

Oakland Voters said HOUSING IS A HUMAN RIGHT!

In an overwhelming victory that marks a turning point after 70 years of racist housing policy in California, 80% of Oaklanders voted YES on Measure Q, authorizing the City to build 13,000 units of deeply affordable, publicly subsidized housing for low-income residents.

Measure U, which passed by a whopping 76% of the vote, will invest $350 million to fund the development of this housing.

Measure V, the 3rd ballot measure that Care 4 Community Action organized voters to support, passed by 68% and will expand Just Cause eviction protections to tens of thousands more Oakland households, stabilizing the housing market and protecting students and educators from being evicted during the school year.

Shoutout to our champion in City Hall, Carroll Fife, Oakland City Council - D3 for authoring this wildly popular housing justice legislation, our friends at Protect Oakland Renters for building this campaign with us, and our 50 amazing volunteer canvassers!

We ran this campaign on a shoestring budget. As the lead organization running the field operation for all 3 housing justice ballot measures, we spent 3 cents for every 1 yes vote.

These victories weren’t won in the mad-dash of the election cycle - Care 4 Community Action organizes Oakland residents to door knock their neighborhoods every week, building community and popular support for housing justice all throughout the year.

JOIN US! We’re having tons of fun and we are WINNING. Help organize your neighborhood to fight for the solutions our communities need.

The rule, embedded in the state constitution, requires local governments to turn to their voters for approval if they want to build public housing. The campaign for Article 34 appealed to racist fears about integrating neighborhoods and Cold War anxieties about encroaching communism.

Repost from Carroll Fife, Oakland City Council - D3

Oakland voters will be seeing Measure Q on the ballot this November. Read this article about why Article 34 is an obstacle to building affordable housing - and why we should repeal it.

The article also shares why some California Senators, such as Sen. Scott Wiener from SF, are also in the process of sponsoring a bill to repeal Article 34. Voters will get to decide to repeal this article from the California Constitution in 2024. The last repeal attempt was in 1993 and significant public education may be required in order for this repeal attempt to be successful.

“This is the first forum I've experienced with mayoral candidates talking about housing who centered organizing, identified as renters and working class people, and represent leadership from the grassroots. Our community deserves responsiveness and representatives who have politics that are aligned, who also understand how to navigate the halls of power.
:
Parent Voices Oakland is looking for skilled conveners with a sharp understanding of policy who can bring different parts of our progressive movement together, even when we don't agree. Systems change is laborious. All of these ideas are really incredible and how we ensure that departments, agencies, and other jurisdictions are coordinated and at least reducing if not repairing the harm to our most vulnerable residents will require someone with deep ties to community and also understands our current political landscape, which is arguably one of the most anti-Black, anti-working poor and pro-policing and surveillance in history.”
