Mission: Educate Our State is a grassroots, parent-led organization educating and uniting Californians to advocate for systemic change that will provide all students with a high-quality public education. California is falling drastically behind in every educational measure for student success including: test scores, dropout rates, funding per pupil, and teacher-student ratios. California is failing its children; the time for change is now!

Guide to California’s education budget deferrals: pros, cons and costs of delayed payments

Most public schools will be dealt a heavy blow due to California's falling revenue, in the form of record setting deferrals. These started yesterday, with a delay in their June 30 payment. Our poorest school districts will suffer the most.

School districts prefer late payments to budget cuts but some districts will bear a larger burden, and it may be years before deferrals are paid off.

We are hopeful that with parents Gavin Newsom and Jennifer Siebel Newsom at the helm, for the first time our schools won’t pay the highest price. Schools already give up $9 BILLION every year of their stable, local property taxes, please don’t defer their state funding. That hurts the poorest schools in the poorest counties in California, those least able to weather yet another funding crisis. Teachers still need to be paid when the money does not come in.

Teacher Tom

We know the research says play-based learning for young children, and not forcing children to read in kindergarten. What do you think? If you agree, how do we change the trajectory and embrace the research?

This is not my feeling. This not my opinion. This is not my philosophy. These are the facts as far as we can currently determine them. It is cruel, even abusive, to base our educational system on other people's feelings and fantasies, even if they are rich and powerful. For the sake of our children, we must demand play-based education because, damn it, that's what the evidence tells us.

We wish you a safe and happy halloween! If you have some time while waiting for your trick-or-treaters, get informed about one of the worst tricks -- taking the schools' property tax away from them! We defeated it once (thank you!) but it will be back with a different title and we will need your help again :). https://www.educateourstate.org/noonsb5

Active Shooter And Other Drills At School Are Giving Kids A Lifetime Of Anxiety

We hear very little good coming out of these active shooter drills -- and serious stress. Let's figure out a better way to address the dysfunction that creates people who want to attack children and schools, instead of asking children to attempt (often unsuccessfully) to avoid a situation because we could not confront possible solutions. Thoughts?

There is a fine line between teaching kids to make good decisions and forcing them to think — and worry — like tiny grown-ups.

Wooo hoooo! Thank you to all of you who shared our posts, called, wrote, and to our tireless (volunteer!) Research Director Jennifer Bestor who went up and testified in Sacramento against SB-5 several times and to our Chair Delaine Eastin who wrote about it and spread the word. Tonight is a victory for the children in California’s poorest school districts, for the integrity of our local tax dollars, and for the power of the people over wealthy special interests. We are so grateful that Gavin Newsom is putting children first in so many ways, and that his administration continues to work to ensure a bright future for all of the children of California.

Please contact the governor today by phone or email and ask him to VETO SB-5 — he has until the 13th or it becomes law (contact info: https://govapps.gov.ca.gov/gov40mail/ ) and of it is law once again our local property tax dollars collected to fund education are diverted. Tell your friends — it is urgent. Thank you!

Tell the person who answers that you are calling to ask the governor to VETO SB-5 -- they won't want any more info. A veto means you want local taxes raised for schools to be used for schools and not taken for other purposes. (more details below about this 30 year bill that would divert about $2 billion a year in school designated property taxes away from schools :( ).

Not again! PLEASE leave what little is left of schools’ property tax alone

We need your help. Share this post and make the call below. The legislature asks voters to fund school construction but instead of asking them to fund local projects it passed SB-5 to take funds from disadvantaged schools to fund non-school projects -- $2 BILLION a year for 30 YEARS. Your voice matters. SB-5 is on Gov. Gavin Newsom's desk awaiting action.

Opinion | We Have Ruined Childhood

Bring back childhood for the well-being of children, families and society.
‘No longer able to rely on communal structures for child care or allow children time alone, parents who need to work are forced to warehouse their youngsters for long stretches of time. School days are longer and more regimented. Kindergarten, which used to be focused on play, is now an academic training ground for the first grade. Young children are assigned homework even though numerous studies have found it harmful. STEM, standardized testing and active-shooter drills have largely replaced recess, leisurely lunches, art and music.’

For youngsters these days, an hour of free play is like a drop of water in the desert. Of course they’re miserable.

States are starting to require mental health classes for all students. It’s about dang time.

We like this idea. What do you think?
‘Hopefully, adding mental health education in schools will help not only those kids who struggle with mental health issues, but also help the kids who don't better support those who do. Hopefully, it will help give kids the tools they need to manage their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Hopefully, it will help lessen the stigma surrounding mental illness and create a more open environment for people to share their experiences.’

The re-assessment of industrial property tax was a major part of then Gubernatorial candidate Eastin's platform, can I ask if her or this organization has an endorsement or comment on Proposition 15?
As we head into summer, we have an opportunity as educators, parents, and community members to take some time to really think about our educational system and what we would like it to look like in the fall and beyond. There is so much that I hate about what Covid-19 has done to our lives but the opportunity for change in education is one thing that makes me hopeful. If my district and community's actions over the last many months are any indication, change is possible. Now more than ever, we need to be putting money and resources towards building a better system. This is the time to put our faith in teachers, students, and education in general. It is by improving the educational system that we will help our country not only survive this pandemic but come out of it stronger than ever. The book, Teaching While Handcuffed, describes a teacher's journey within the public education system and my new book, Perspectives: 20 Stories, 1 Classroom, demonstrates what students feel as they navigate the public education system. Both of these books are available on Amazon. This summer, I encourage you to read these books, reflect, work to reinvent public education, support efforts to change, and more than ever, make your votes count. Together, we can make a difference. Please share freely and recommend these books to others. Thank You! Perspectives: 20 stories, 1 classroom

If you are in favor of later start times for your children to keep them healthy, please email: Asm. Limon [email protected] Asm. Eggman [email protected] ASm. Flora (R) [email protected] Asm. Waldron (R) [email protected] Asm. Cervantes [email protected] ASm. Chen (R) [email protected] Asm. Choi (R) [email protected] ASm. Baker (R) [email protected] Dear Assembly Member, I am a constituent and I'm writing to urge your support for SB 328 (Portantino). This bill is evidence-based, necessary to protect children's health and fiscally responsible, and is consistent with California's role in addressing public-health policy issues at the state level. Additionally, these later start times have been shown to increase graduation rates, test scores and attendance – all of which are of statewide interest. The CTA, CSBA and the CCSA should have absolutely no voice regarding health policies for our children. They are not medical professionals. To leave this decision up to local control means we are allowing teachers and school board members to decide what is sound medical policy for our children. If local control is the goal, then schools should not be allowed to trump the power of parents in making health decisions for their own children. Parents are forced to knowingly harm their children by waking them at unhealthy times to comply with California law. EVERY MAJOR MEDICAL ORGANIZATION in this country has found that school start times before 8:30 AM are UNHEALTHY for our children. The CDC does not haphazardly recommend policy. This is an urgent issue. Health and safety issues cannot be left to decision-makers at the local level who are not health professionals. Just as the state has created laws to protect public and child safety (car seats, lead paint, asbestos, etc), the state needs to protect our children from unhealthy and unsafe school start times.
