Our CommonSpirit Health Grocery Store, centered in the Fruitvale District of Oakland, has steadily served a growing population of low-income seniors since its opening!

Our recipients at this store have an average age of 72, with an average income of $795. It is clear that this is a need that we are happy to be able to help relieve, with the help of our partners and volunteers of course!

We are mourning our beloved longtime volunteer, Hope, who recently passed away at age 100. For over 30 years she came weekly or twice weekly to make sure all the produce in our warehouse was ready to be taken to the distribution sites.

In her 70’s, 80’s and 90’s she left her home before the sun was up and took a number of busses to get to Mercy to volunteer. Her work ethic and strength were a marvel. If we told her to take a break, we would turn around and find her sweeping or mopping. Even after she moved into Mercy Retirement and Care Center in her late 90’s she would still join the team to add items to bags or sort some fruit.

Hope knew the anguish of hunger in her youth so worked hard to make sure others were fed. She is a shining example of “Seniors Helping Seniors”. She made a massive difference in the lives of thousands of her peers and we all are grateful.
