The 22nd Annual Stay in School Kickoff Reception at One Toyota of Oakland was a massive success! Thank you to all that were able to attend in person or virtually to support the Lend A Hand Foundation. Your support is essential to the work that LAHF does to provide resources that are otherwise not available to children and families.

Hello everyone! This is a friendly reminder regarding an upcoming event.
This event will celebrate Black Excellence and also fundraise for three organizations who are transforming lives in Oakland’s Black community. Sponsors of this grand Juneteenth event will have an opportunity to showcase their dedication to the success of East Oakland/Bay Area residents, network with community leaders, and increase their local visibility, all while having some fun.
The celebration will feature special guests, including Grammy Award Winning Artist Dwayne Wiggins, music and entertainment, a soulful food experience, African wine, and a ceremony honoring these three incredible organizations:
ESO Ventures https://www.eso-ventures.com/ - who launched in the midst of the pandemic to help Black and LatinX entrepreneurs from East Oakland build and grow their businesses
Lend A Hand Foundation https://www.lendahandfoundation.org/ - who ramped up their capacity to bring critical services and resources to Oakland’s low-income students and families so they could stay engaged and continue their educational journey
Our Kids “OK” Program https://okprogram.org/ - whose unique model of matching Black police officers with at-risk Black middle and high school youth became even more invaluable in the wake of the George Floyd and Breonna Taylor murders, the Summer of Awakening regarding police brutality, and the increasing homicide rate that has plagued our city.
This fundraising event will take place on Saturday, June 19, from 5:30–8:30pm, on the rooftop of the Port Workspace (344 Thomas L. Berkley Way, Oakland, CA 94612) which overlooks the beautiful Lake Merritt!

General information

The organization was started with little or no funds in order to provide as many services as possible to less fortunate youth with a special focus on youth in transitional housing facilities (shelters, foster care) and their families. Many fish frys, raffles and other fundraising activities were held to meet the goals of the organization. The first mission of love in 1998 was to provide over 100 youth at the Henry Robinson Multi-Service Center with Easter Baskets. Many volunteers and supporters came forward to help. Today, the organization has grown to an 11 member Board of Directors with 7 Advisory Board Members, 13 and growing very important Ambassadors who carry out the day to day functions making sure the organization continues to provide very important services in our communities.

Our Story

Did You Know, the Lend A Hand Foundation (LAHF) started the first backpack giveaway program in downtown Oakland in 1997 in front of the Henry Robinson Multi-Service Center at the corner of 16th and Clay. In 1997, we provided 200 backpacks that were provided by a great sponsor. Then UPS, another sponsor who has been with LAHF since the beginning, used their expertise by stuffing the backpacks and delivering them to the site. To date, LAHF has provided over 85,000 backpacks and supplies to impoverished children and youth.

Giving of backpacks serves many purposes as it provides a sense of confidence, pride, preparedness, eliminates embarrassment, and relieves parents from bearing, most likely not available, the expense. Again, this August, LAHF and its volunteers will roll up its sleeves to support over 5,000 students attending schools needing support. The supplies will be delivered directly to the schools the sponsors have chosen to support.

Also, this year LAHF will celebrate its 20th Year Anniversary of the Backpack Program along with honoring many who paved the way to reach this milestone. Not only does LAHF provide a backpack program, it also attempts to eliminate as many barriers as possible that keep students from getting to school, participating, and achieving. We want the most fragile youth in our community to experience as many opportunities as possible so they too can thrive.

In December for the past 19 years, LAHF has held a Holiday Celebration for families mostly residing in transitional housing facilities. This event brings much joy to not only those on the receiving end but for all that are involved. Imagine 300+ children/teens, and parents walking into a room with large round tables covered with decorative table cloths, a stage covered with bags of gifts, the aroma of a delicious meal being prepared, entertainment, Santa, and soon as happy dine that almost raises the roof.
