Good news neighbors and supporters.
We are going to start the beautification project at St. Andrews Plaza this coming month.
Steps to follow:
1. Execute an intensive community outreach campaign to the neighborhood
2. Prepare site and fence off St. Andrews Plaza Mid-March
3. Begin installing floor mosaic
4. Install new 25' sculpture.

We estimate this project will take about 5 months to complete.

In response to community concerns about St. Andrews Plaza on 34th and San Pablo Ave, Councilmember Lynette McElhaney’s office is convening a town hall meeting to get community input about its future use. We invite neighbors, property owners, and business owners to share both their concerns and ideas on how to improve and use this community space. October 21, 5:30-7pm, St. Mary's Center.

We are looking for community members who want to help us out. We have a lot of great projects and need more community involvement. Can you help?

What's going on at the park on San Pablo and 32nd Street?
-This little park is called St. Andrews Plaza.
-You might have noticed that some of the sick Eucalyptus trees have finally been removed and are no longer a fire hazard
-All,
This is an update on St. Andrews Plaza and tasks agreed upon.

-The locust trees that obstruct visibility and invite illegal activity will be removed at a later date.

-All of the seating in the park will be removed by Public Works. This seating has been a major issue since it is used to hide behind and carry out illegal activity.

-All planters will be removed and the water will be capped at the valves. This will make it easy for the demo crew to remove the broken down floor surface.

-All food distribution will be coordinated with St. Mary's Center and no longer be allowed at the park. The park has no bathroom facilities, thus serving food results in defecation throughout the neighborhood. There are 4 other places along San Pablo Avenue within a 4 block radius where food can be had for free, where there are bathroom facilities.

-Our Beautification plans have been put on hold until all of the work has been completed at the site. See plans in our timeline.

8 Ways to Promote Summer Literacy

Kids literacy:
A former client of mine and good pal forwarded this insightful list of 8 ways to help your kids get ahead or catch up during the summer. Enjoy!

Studies show that children in all grade levels who do not read or have access to books during the summer may lose up to 2 months of reading performance. So how do we prevent the summer slide—or even accelerate reading growth? Here are a few ideas:

Restorative Justice Programs Take Root in Schools

Restorative Justice is a fantastic philosophy for learning to take responsibility of our actions. It is sort of what mom used to do at home when we were kids. let's hope that it will be truly implemented in our schools and back in our lives.

Restorative justice, which encourages young people to develop empathy for one another, is increasingly offered in schools seeking an alternative to “zero tolerance” policies.

OPD, Mayor Quan, Councilmember Lynette McElhaney and City Staff met with over 150 residents from West Oakland today to collect community input for the Wasserman Group. We have been assured that this input will be the basis for the forthcoming OPD reorganization plan.

Our hope is that Oakland one day will be a truly Community Policing based city.

These are the suggestions that we worked to put together with the West Oakland Neighbors group and the West Oakland Green Initiative. What do you think?

Our supermodel this month is CURTIS. This little guy came to us from his loving family who couldn't take care of all the pets they have. We helped them spay and neuter and vaccinate all their adult dogs and Curtis recently found himself a brand new place to hang his leash and collar through our adoption program! Yay.

We all have the power to take part in the solution against violence and disparity for our innercity kids. This past weekend we took 3 West Oakland families to play in the snow. The trip was as successful as the smiles on the kids faces within these photos. We are planning another trip to Tahoe in March. Help us do this again. Voluynteer or donate today!

Do you like pollinator insects? They needs your help. Without them 2/3 of all of our food is simply gone.
This is why the San Pablo Corridor Coalition is joining forces with the West Oakland Green Initiative and West Oakland Neighbors to create Pollinator friendly gardens all over West Oakland.
Join our efforts as we continue to improve one of the innercity areas with the worst air quality in the entire state.

3 Killed In Oakland As City Changes Course On Crime Fighting - CBS San Francisco

Despite our best efforts and years of good work this article is proof that we can't ease up yet on our work at Mead Avenue. It is truly a shame that the end of 2012 broke our years of success at Mead Avenue without murders.

The San Pablo Corridor Coalition is ready to re-energize our efforts to help our neighbors have a safe street again.

After 4 years doing this work, I am always amazed and surprised every weekend when I show up to clean St. Andrews Plaza. Some how I am always ready to have no one show up. It is wonderful to see new faces coming to lend a hand. We are so lucky. Please don't give up. Continue to come give us a hand.
This is the amazing team that showed up this weekend (01/12.13) to pick up the illegal dumping, the scrapped needles and the trash that continues to be a part of this little inner city park in West Oakland.

I want to share with you the best news 0f 2013 yet! The Oakland Arts Commission unanimously approved the renovation project the San Pablo Corridor Coalition presented. This arts project aims to address public safety, economic development, blight and crime issues. The first step will be to fence off the park in order to carry out renovations. A towering, colorful sculpture from American Steel will be installed along with a gorgeous mosaic art installation that will tie this project together with the breathtaking mural recently painted along the I-580 underpass that connects Oakland with Emeryville via San Pablo Avenue. Things get better everyday!
