Our many wisdom lifeways and faith traditions call us to care for Earth. Here's another way we can do just that!

As we experience the gift of water in the form of unprecedented levels of rain and snow across our state, let us reflect on how we have tended the well. Have our actions turned life-giving waters deadly? Without judgment or recriminations, can we become better keepers of the well? Here is a water-focused devotion for the Third Sunday in Lent, from our friends at Presbyterians for Earth Care
March 12, 2023
By Courtney Bowen
John 4:5-42
“Living water” does not describe our water. Water in many places, thanks to pollution and runoff, cannot support life at all. It’s the opposite of living water. It’s deadly water.
Jesus says to the woman of Samaria, “If you knew the gift of God … you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” Do we know a gift from God when it’s in front of us? Do we, like the woman, fail to recognize it?
We have not well-tended to the gift from God of water. But, we are not without hope. Change is possible.
Initially, the woman is confused and mocks Jesus (“Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob?”). Yet, the woman is able to move forward, see more clearly, and even asks Jesus for this “living water.” Jesus proceeds to tell her everything she’s ever done. There’s no mention of sin or judgment of those actions. There is only the revelation that Jesus knows her entirely. And in being known by Jesus, the woman begins to understand who he is - the Messiah. It is in knowing Jesus and being known by Jesus, that the woman experiences the life-giving gift, the living water of Christ. She is changed and rushes to the village to share the good news with others.
How might we be changed by Christ? In knowing him and being known by him, might we be more cognizant of gifts from God? Might that knowing, that relationship, change how we live and treat God’s gifts - not turning them deadly, but ensuring that we and others may experience that “spring of water gushing up to eternal life?”
Prayer
God of Living Waters, help us to know you, and in that knowing become channels of your gifts to the world. Amen.
Courtney Bowen is Associate Pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Jackson, TN (a certified Earth Care Congregation of the PCUSA).

On this day in Women's History Month we honor Jane Adams.
James Adams was one of the most prominent reformers of the early 20th century Progressive Era and would probably have been considered an environmental justice activist if the term had existed at the time. She was a pioneer in uncovering environmental health concerns and advocating for environmental equality for all people, no matter their income or ethnicity. She and her fellow activists uncovered lead poisoning and industrial poisons in many low-income communities. In 1931, she became the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Tell Gov. Newsom: End the Revolving Door at CalGEM!
For years, CalGEM – the top regulator of California’s fossil fuel industry – has failed to fulfill its mandate to protect public health and the climate. It has failed to provide key data on oil and gas hazards to Californians, issue plugging orders for thousands of idle wells, inspect existing wells for leaks, secure appropriate bonds for well cleanup, and respond to public comments in a timely manner. With the prior head's resignation, Governor Newsom now has the opportunity to appoint someone who is committed to public health and environmental justice. to this important position.
At the end of 2022, the head of CalGEM (a former Chevron executive) rubber stamped hundreds of new oil drilling permits — about half of which allow drilling within the public safety buffer zone required under SB 1137. Thankfully, he just resigned. Now, Governor Newsom will appoint his replacement....

Welcome to CIPL
Help us get to 1000 congregations! Go to www.interfaithpower.org/welcome/ and sign the pledge. Our faith traditions call on us to love our neighbor, and to protect the Earth for our children and future generations. California Interfaith Power & Light's network of diverse faith communities is responding to this call, working to address global warming as a moral issue. Spanning the state from Chico to San Diego, Mono Lake to Monterey Bay, our congregations are putting their faith into action by becoming more energy efficient, installing solar arrays, planting community gardens, and advocating for strong climate policies locally and in Sacramento. Together, with the wisdom and love of our many faiths, we can model the changes we know are needed for the health our of common home.

Yesterday, the CIPL Steering Committee gathered for our annual in-person planning retreat at Skyline UCC in Oakland. We also made time to offer prayers of blessing on the new IPL parachute banners that will be part of the faith contingents at the DC and Oakland People's Climate Marches. Photos by Daniel Naftel.

Meet this year's winner of the Cool Climate Award for a Green Building! First Congregational Church of Palo Alto is one of the "greenest" churches around. Despite some initial opposition, Rev. Eileen Altman and lay leaders like Anne Wilson were able to bring about large changes to their church building, including adding solar panels, remodeling the sanctuary, and replacing turf with drought tolerant landscaping. Their work inside their congregation and out speaks to the impact that we can all have on our faith communities through faithful and prayerful commitment to Creation.

Meet this year's winner of the Cool Climate Award for Energy Efficiency and Conservation! Beth Chayim Chadashim is an LGBT+ synagogue that has been at the forefront of environmental stewardship, displaying a deep commitment to this Earth and to all living things. Every element of the design and construction of their house of worship was meant to reduce their demands on the environment and prevent waste. The BCC community serves as a model to all people of faith to seek to live in a way that cherishes and protects the gifts of Creation.

Meet this year's winner of the Cool Climate Award for a Green Retreat Center! An interfaith center that helps to cultivate a spirituality grounded in Creation, La Casa de Maria has intentionally sought to ensure that they care for Creation in all that they do, from growing organic food, to installing solar panels and conserving water. Their example shows that often, the best way to foster a respect and care for the environment is to interact with it on a personal level.

West Side Missionary Baptist Church: Climate Advocacy
Meet this year's winner of the Cool Climate Awards for Climate Advocacy! Rev. Ken Chambers and his congregation, West Side Missionary Baptist Church, were a crucial part of the grassroots No Coal in Oakland campaign, which succeeded in preventing harmful, polluting coal from being shipped out of a new port terminal. The work of West Side Baptist is a reminder that progress toward greater environmental justice is possible through hard work and collective action.
