Bay Area Urban Debate League (BAUDL)

Bay Area Urban Debate League (BAUDL) We are dedicated to expanding opportunities for Bay youth to become articulate, informed leaders in their schools and communities.
The Bay Area Urban Debate League (BAUDL) is part of a nationwide movement that seeks to establish and maintain competitive debate teams in under-resourced public high schools. The BAUDL has partnered with school districts in San Francisco and Oakland so that the young people of the Bay Area can participate in rigorous, exciting competition and become articulate and informed leaders in their schools and communities. With the help of dozens of volunteers and sponsors, the league helps students from all backgrounds and all levels of academic achievement develop into trained, powerful advocates and skilled critical thinkers, ready to graduate from high school and college and take on the world.

The Bay Area Urban Debate League will be highlighting ALL of the schools and students we work with. This week we are celebrating James Lick Middle School debaters. Coached by Elise Dicharry and Laney Corda for the past 8 years, the James Lick Bulldog debaters have grown bigger voices and honed their listening skills as they rise to the challenge of debate! The Bulldogs can't wait to continue to build their team, their confidence and hopefully some trophies starting up in the fall of 2020.

This season the JLMS Bulldogs gained some new team mates, participated in four spectacular tournaments, and learned some important lessons along the way.

Sixth grader Mila Garrone was an incredible new addition to the team. Always up for a challenge and a constant supporter of her teammates, Mila had a blast this year. To describe her experience, Mila says, "Participating in BAUDL was amazing, it really helped me build my confidence." We can't wait to see Mila in action when we get back to school!

Seventh grade phenom Henry Top is one of the kindest, most dedicated students you'll ever meet. He is also a force to be reckoned with in the debate arena! He shines a light on the importance of debate in our lives. "Debate forces you to seek within and find every little detail that hides inside of it." Watch out congress - Henry turns 25 in just 12 short years. Better start preparing now!

Rene Reyes, also a seventh grader, has brought joy, laughter and the true meaning of friendship to the James Lick team. Rene loves debate because he loves working with a partner. He has learned to listen closely, and says debate "made this year very fun!" Seventh grade and fun don't generally go together in the same sentence - but who could be bored when they've got Rene Reyes by their side! We love Rene and can't wait to see him rock BAUDL as an 8th grader next year.

The Bulldogs are keeping the debate spirit alive by learning policy debate with the one and only BAUDL alum and Bulldog legend, Santos! Ms. Dicharry and Ms. Corda send the warmest congratulations to all of BAUDL's graduates this year and look forward to seeing everyone in the fall.

Today is #GivingTuesdayNow, a new global day of giving and unity that will take place in addition to the regularly scheduled #GivingTuesday as an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19.

If you are in a position to give we would appreciate any consideration for BAUDL. Our biggest fundraisers usually take place at the end of March and in May so those were postponed and are very up in the air right now. Any help you can provide would make a big difference for us. Donations can be made here:

The Bay Area Urban Debate League would like to honor Skyline High school debater Razkiah Dharhan on her acceptance to CAL and receiving the Fiat Lux Scholarship. Razkiah has been a avid debater since a freshmen year. She acredits her ability to express her creativity and openness to learning new things to her time spent with BAUDL. When Razkiah first started debate she was shy and scared to express herself. With the support of BAUDL staff Razkiah has been able to overcome these hurdles. Razkiah shares, β€œ Thank you BAUDL. If you all had not sent me to CAL debate camp that summer, I would’ve never been interested in this activity. The activity that would change my life.”
In college Razkiah plans to continue to give back to BAUDL by volunteering to teach and judge.
Congratulations Razkiah and the class of 2020 graduates.

BAUDL seniors, please share your quotes and senior photos. We want to honor your hard work this season.

The Bay Area Urban Debate League will be highlighting ALL of the schools and students we work with. This week we are celebrating Oakland Technical High School debaters. Coached by Seth Zimmerman for the last 6 years, Oakland Technical High School debate team is a powerhouse.

Much can be said about the Oakland Technical High School debate team as natural leaders in and out of the classroom. The debate team is involved in various activities but are consistent participants and competitors for BAUDL. Several times this season the team has participated in attending Oakland School Board meetings to support BAUDL in keeping debate in Oakland schools.

National circuit debaters Oakland Tech Veronica Liu and Megan Ma, a junior and senior duo, have traveled to tournaments across the country. Competing in tournaments in Utah, Los Angeles, and Berkeley area. Veronica Liu and Megan Ma have ranked in the top 50 speakers of several tournaments. This is no small feat for students who are helping to keep their debate team program thriving while also balancing academics and extracurricular activities.

Another national circuit debater is Liam Ryals. Liam Ryals has competed at several tournaments with Veronica Liu. At Arizona State University tournament the pair cleared with a 4-2 record and were double octavos-finalist. Liam Ryals and Veronica Liu continue to show commitment to debate and are relentless with their research and attendance at student leadership council(SLC) meetings.
The Oakland Tech debate team has collectively worked toward empowering and helping younger debaters grow in debate, investing in their goals of continuing to be a power house. Their hard work can be seen, all of the rookies from the beginning of the year finished at the JV. Some of these debaters include: Sage Plaisted, Elena Svoboda, Charlotte Gaultier, and Ashley Quach.
The novice division has also seen some notable success with debaters Marianne Eichmann receiving 4th speaker and 2nd novice team at our last tournament in March. Kamaya Jackson, Alden Gates, Kayla Millihiem, and Sylvie Croteau have placed in top 3 at BAUDL tournaments showing the team’s commitment to success

The Bay Area Urban Debate League will be highlighting ALL of the schools and students we work with. To kick off this celebration of young people, we will be celebrating Emery High Schools debaters. Coached by Crichlow for the last 8 years, Emery High School debate team has become a force to reckon with.

National circuit debaters Ne’Jarah Soriano and Salvador Sanchez have taken on the circuit with grit and endurance. In such a short time of working together they have achieved so much. At Stanford National Invitational with more than 80 teams competing, this freshman/ junior duo cleared with a 4-2 record and were 24th seed to the top 32 finalist. This team continues to put in the work during SLC meetings held at the BAUDL office where they go over dense reading materials and participate in lectures and discussions held by the East Bay Program Lead, Jazmine P.

On top of that Ne’Jarah Soriano placed 7th speaker out of 150 students nation-wide at Stanford University. During the Fall Season, Emery attended the Damien Invitational where they had a 4-2 record and cleared to elimination rounds. They made it all the way to the top 4 finalist and Ne’Jarah Soriano was named 4th speaker of the entire tournament. Ne’Jarah Soriano has won 1st place, varsity speaker, all year (undefeated) at Bay Area Urban Debate League tournaments for the 2019-2020 season. For the 3rd year Emery HS qualified to attend the National Urban Debate Tournament.

Novice debaters Kenny Smith and Treasure Metters attended their first tournament at March madness and they killed it. They had a maximum of two practices before embarking on the debate world. Next season they will be a threat.

This team has a lot of promise for a successful season and national ranking!
