Through the port authority-led ECHO Program, we coordinate one of the world’s largest voluntary efforts to reduce the impacts of shipping on endangered whales –– and this year, a record-breaking number of ships participated in these efforts.
From June to November this year, more than 85% of all large commercial ships slowed down or stayed distanced from key areas of southern resident killer whale critical habitat, helping to create a quieter underwater environment for the whales to hunt and find their prey.
This impressively strong participation rate sets a record in the ECHO Program’s six-year history of coordinating large-scale underwater noise reduction initiatives along B.C.’s southern coast, in collaboration with partners and advisors across government, the marine transportation industry, Indigenous communities, and environmental groups.
We offer our special thanks to our many partners and advisors for the role they played in making these results a reality, including the BC Coast Pilots, BC Ferries, Canadian Coast Guard, Chamber of Shipping of British Columbia, Council of Marine Carriers, Cruise Lines International Association - North West & Canada, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Natural Resources Defense Council, Ocean Wise, Pacific Pilotage Authority, Royal Canadian Navy, Shipping Federation of Canada, Transport Canada, Washington State Ferries, WWF-Canada, Hapag-Lloyd (Canada) Inc., Holland America Line, Marine Exchange of Puget Sound, Pacific Merchant Shipping Association, Pacific Northwest Ship & Cargo Services, U.S. Coast Guard, and the Pacheedaht First Nation and Makah Tribe, who were key partners in the development and implementation of safe ship slowdown practices through Swiftsure Bank.

■ PMSA says California Nut Exports via California Ports are Rising
There’s a controversy over California nuts. Specifically, nuts exported through California ports. Are the export nut totals up or down? Are the nut exports being diverted to other ports as has been suggested by media reports?
According to the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association West Coast Trade Report for June 2022 California tree nut exports shipped through California ports, including the Port of Oakland, are rising and there is little evidence that exporters are utilizing the Port of Houston as an alternative export port.
PMSA says tree nut export tonnages shipped via California ports during the second quarter, 2022, are way above 2021 levels:
• Almonds (+21.9%)
• Walnuts (+40.9%),
• Pistachios (+53.6%).

As a former Seattle Sea Scout (see my pics!) I’m really looking forward to joining Fremont Area Chamber of Commerce, North Seattle Industrial Association, Ballard Alliance, Northwest Marine Trade Association (NMTA), Pacific Merchant Shipping Association, Washington Maritime Federation, Seattle Propeller Club and the Seattle Maritime Business Coalition at tonight’s 36th LD Happy Hour
From my scouting days until today, I’ve been a passionate supporter of Seattle’s maritime economy. I want to see it strong into the future. I’m the only candidate in the race with workforce development experience, and I want to see us do big things in this district — like make the Seattle Maritime Academy into the Statewide Maritime Academy with secure funding for ther future. And ensure that every 8th grader in Seattle is visiting their high school skill center and learning about maritime careers. And bring more women and people of color into our maritime industries.
The future is bright!

In the coming weeks, the sight of cargo ships lined up outside the Port of Oakland will become visible only in our memories. In an effort to “reduce congestion, to promote maritime safety and minimize air quality impacts,” the Pacific Maritime Association, the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association, and the Marine Exchange have joined forces to create a “new off-shore queuing process.”

Chairing hearing on the state of our ports. The state must continue to partner with the goods movement as our economy recovers from the pandemic and to help meet statewide emission reduction goals.

We are looking forward to today's 6th Annual State of the Port. Thank you Wil Norcal and Pacific Merchant Shipping Association for giving us this sponsorship opportunity.
The Port of Los Angeles moved near-record cargo in 2019 with a total of 9,337,632 Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs), just short of the second-best year in its 113-year history. The milestone was announced by Port Executive Director Gene Seroka at the annual State of the Port event hosted by the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association.
“In the face of lagging exports due to international trade tensions and tariff uncertainties, the Port of Los Angeles has maintained strong momentum and kept cargo flowing,” Seroka said. “This feat was only possible because of the extensive cooperation and continued efficiency improvements by our terminal operators, supply chain partners and longshore workforce.”
