Most people picture a bruise. That is the version we were all taught to look for.

But control usually starts somewhere quieter. An account she is not on. A job that became impossible to keep. A number on a credit report she cannot explain.

Naming it matters, because a woman cannot ask for help with something she does not have words for yet.

If you read this and something felt familiar, you are not imagining it.

-----

A lot of people start using because something hurt first.
Depression, grief, trauma. Those things do not sit quietly. They look for an exit, and sometimes the exit is whatever makes the noise stop for one night.
Most people in that spot are just trying to get through the week.
What changes it is connection. Faith, a friend, a counselor, a room of people who will let you say the hard part out loud. Nobody is built to carry that by themselves.
If you are in it right now, we are here.

Nobody claps for the day you got out of bed. Or the phone call you finally made. Or the appointment you almost cancelled and went to anyway.
Those days count. They count more than the ones that look good from the outside.
If today was a small one for you, it still moved you somewhere.

---------

People ask what a donation actually pays for. Some of it is a room.

Small chairs. Toys where a kid can reach them. A door that closes so a family can have their time without an audience.

That room stays open the same way the housing, the recovery support, and the SWB cohort stay open. People give, and it keeps running.

If you want to be part of that, link in bio.

Recovery is usually described as stopping something. It's better understood as starting everything else.

Sobriety is the first thing that happens, not the last. What comes after is longer and quieter: rebuilding trust with people you hurt, learning to sit with memories instead of outrunning them, holding a routine, holding a job, holding yourself accountable on a regular Tuesday when nobody is watching. Those skills take years. They also transfer into every part of a life, which is why recovery reaches so much further than the person in it.

Stable housing is a big part of what makes that possible. It is very hard to rebuild a life while you are also figuring out where you're sleeping.

Jackie tells her own story here. Listen all the way through.

Some things you only realize you survived once you are on the other side of them.

At the time it just felt like getting through the day. Looking back, it was more than that.

So we want to ask. What is something you got through that you didn't think you would?

No details needed. A few words is enough. Someone reading the comments might need to see that it is possible.

-----

No hacen falta detalles. Unas pocas palabras bastan.

A number can move in the right direction and still not mean what it looks like.

The women in our programs already know this part. What stands between them and steady work is rarely ambition. It is a shift that does not bend around a custody hearing, a bus route that does not run early enough, a gap on a resume that nobody will let them explain.

That is what our Serenity Wellness and Business cohort is built around. Confidence, communication, how you carry a room. So when the door opens she walks through it and stays.

Our next class starts at the beginning of the new year. Interest form in bio if you want your name on the list early.

Supervised visitation usually happens in places that were never built for it. A courthouse hallway. A fast food booth. A borrowed office after hours. The room shapes the visit before anyone says a word.

There is a room here instead. Small chairs, toys within reach, warm light, and hours that belong to her and her kids.

She decides what they do with that time. Reading on the floor. Braiding hair. Hearing everything about school.

—--

Peinar. Escuchar todo sobre la escuela.

People ask what a donation actually turns into.

For us, a lot of it turns into a Friday morning on San Pablo Ave. Chairs coming out of the building. Someone's grandmother getting her blood pressure checked. Two neighbors who only ever see each other at this thing, catching up like no time passed.

That morning costs money. Not a lot of money, but real money, every single month. And it comes from people who decided this corner was worth keeping open.

If you have given before, that is what you paid for. If you have been thinking about it, this is where it lands.

Some days sit heavier than others. That doesn't mean you're doing it wrong. It means you're human, and you're still here.
Reaching out takes more courage than most people give it credit for. It means trusting that someone will hold what you hand them. The women in this community do that for each other every day, and it changes what's possible.
Wherever you are in your own journey, whether it's year one or year twenty, someone here has stood where you're standing. You don't have to carry it by yourself.
