There you are on your morning commute traveling at a snail’s pace on Highway 1 southbound from Lightfighter to Monterey. You’re thinking about the last episode of your favorite TV show, when ZOOM goes a motorcycle between the lanes of traffic!

You think to yourself is that legal?!

Yes. Yes it is. Although it is highly encouraged to only be conducted by experienced motorcyclists. Here is what the California Vehicle Code has to say:

LANE SPLITTING—Defined by California Vehicle Code Section 21658.1 as driving a motorcycle, as defined in Section 400, that has two wheels in contact with the ground, between rows of stopped or moving vehicles in the same lane, including on both divided and undivided streets, roads, or highways.

Here are some safety tips for all drivers:

~Checking mirrors and blind spots, especially before changing lanes or turning.

~Signaling your intentions before changing lanes or merging with traffic.

~Being alert and anticipating possible movements by other motorists.

~Never riding/driving while impaired by drugs, alcohol, or fatigue.

~Being courteous and sharing the road.

On Thursday, the Coalinga CHP Office had a special visitor show up for a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) verification. This motorcycle is a 1951 Vincent Rapide, a rare British motorcycle. The owner, a Coalinga local, had recently purchased this bike from the UK. VIN verifications are done by the CHP on salvage vehicles, out of state vehicles, or vehicles with other issues that need confirmation by CHP. If you see this amazing piece of transportation history traveling along the highways and byways of western Fresno County, give him a thumbs up or wave.

Big budgets, top-shelf riding talent, and years of development weren’t enough to help Harley-Davidson find success with the VR1000 project.
