Founded in 2006, Lotus Bloom operated in shared space and under the fiscal sponsorship with Oakland Ready to Learn. Today, Lotus Bloom is an independent 501(c)(3) in a new location, operating with an all-volunteer Board of Directors and small part-time staff. Our centers serve over 400 families per year by offering early childhood programs, playgroups, literacy activities, and art programs at four high-need neighborhoods throughout Oakland.

This holiday season, we are all spending a lot of time at home.

Getting the essentials we need can be a challenge for families with young children.

This is why Lotus Bloom’s team of family navigators and teachers are hosting distributions to provide essentials like food, diapers, and holiday gifts for families.

Who We Are: Afro-Play (AfroPlayOakland) is a thematic family playgroup based in Afrocentrism for families of the African Diaspora.

Our Mission: Afro-Play exists to Harambee - a Swahili term meaning “All pull together”. It is our mission to achieve oneness and healing among all black families in the African Diaspora.

What We Do: We honor the Black experience. Afro-Play provides a sacred, supportive intergenerational gathering space for the healing, growth and the socialization of both black children and black parents/caregivers. We strive to help build and maintain authentic relationships organically between families through fun, thoughtful and educational curriculum themes surrounded in Afrocentricity. Our Latest Blog Post is all about PLAY

"Ultimately, it's not the expensive iPads or large textbooks but the understanding and bond between the caregiver and child that can make play so great and rewarding in the long run."
- Evan Q., Lotus Bloom Social Media Intern

Evan introduces core learnings about the power of play and the invaluable role of care givers in supporting children's learning and fulfillment, and draws upon his own experiences working with youth to translate Lotus Bloom's evidence-based practices for a fresh and encouraging take on early childhood education and child development.

08/19/2020

Our third and final post in our "What We're Reading" miniseries is "27 Mistakes White Teachers of Black Students Make and how to Fix Them" by Jay Wemsted, an Atlanta High School teacher. Although the title is hefty and a lot to unpack, Mr. Wemsted outlines several key steps that teachers need to be aware of to make themselves a more socially conscious educator. Recognizing the issue of white privilege and supremacy and its presence in society today is one of the first ways educators can fix their mistakes and approach in teaching. Another important factor is media-based racial isolation, where the only exposure to the Black community is through the media--news or sports that can reinforce negative stereotypes.

At Lotus Bloom, this article was chosen for our staff to read because it identifies issues the BIPOC community faces and identifies the root of where these misunderstandings originate from. As educators who practice and continue learning about social justice, we want to create a safe and conscious learning environment where the community can thrive in the face of stereotypes and misconceptions.

We hope you enjoyed this short miniseries, and want to emphasize that Lotus Bloom's staff training and investment is also directly linked to the community! As many as 80% of our staff are parents who formerly used our playgroup programs, including our now Director of Learning Rha Bowden.

We have 42 days left to respond to the 2020 Census, and Census Workers are coming soon! Lotus Bloom will be sharing important information about how to spot a Census worker when they come to your door.

Let’s care for and protect each other by responding to the Census online or via phone. There’s still time to ditch that knock on your door.

The second post in our "What We're Reading" miniseries was chosen specifically by our Director of Learning Rha Bowden for our staff to learn from. "3 Ways to Become a Culturally Responsive Teacher" by Matthew Lynch details several key aspects on how to encourage self reflection in teachers as well as knocking down preconceived biases. "Becoming a Culturally Responsive Teacher identifies a few key ways educators can practice creating lessons that weave in the community's cultural knowledge, wellness, indigenous practices and strengths into all aspects of learning," Rha Bowden says, highlighting on how to collaborate and teach the community while also strengthening the educator's cultural understanding.

Lynch says that each student's culture is dynamic and individualized, just as each family in the Oakland community don't have the same needs. He also emphasizes how an early start in educational focuses like vocabulary can help a child be prepared for school, but the opposite is also true; not having the same access to books or verbal interaction can detract from a student's linguistic development. At Lotus Bloom, we aim to encourage parent and caregiver to child vocal interaction both in multicultural playgroups and in the home.

08/14/2020

The first resource we want to share in our "What We're Reading" miniseries (check back if you missed the intro post!) is "The Danger of a Single Story" by Nigerian author and speaker Chimamanda Adichie. Ms. Adichie illustrates the issue with building a narrative about a people or place through only one frame--whether that's your local news station or national media sources. Explaining that we must fight against conventional wisdom and instead look and understand both sides, she encourages us as consumers of stories to reach out and find more narratives to help us build our cultural voice.

We chose to feature this piece because it shows how important it is to reframe the narrative of our community as a place where we can support and build on each other's creativity and culture. Former director at Room to Bloom Kira Lewis says it best- "People have a lot of judgements about Oakland as a city. Usually we hear in the news how unsafe it is with crime...and nobody takes in how there is so much beauty in Oakland--and so part of the Lotus Bloom name and the brand comes from that even in dirt and mud and ugly places, beautiful things can grow."

08/13/2020

This week at Lotus Bloom, our team will be focusing on professional development to improve our programs to better serve the community! Our Executive Team has curated a list of informative articles and videos featuring Ted talk speaker Chimamanda Adichie and other experts to focus on social justice and family support. Investing in our community and staff is very important to us, as many of our current team started out as parents in Lotus Bloom's multicultural playgroup program!

A short miniseries titled "What We're Reading" will feature these articles and how it connects to our philosophy and staff at Lotus Bloom. Stay tuned on Instagram, Facebook and Linkedin to learn more!

Our Story

Lotus Bloom (LB) is a grassroots family resource center that provides a welcoming space for low income, multicultural families with young children 0-5 years old to play, learn and grow together. Since our inception in 2006, LB has experienced exponential growth and is now a set of thriving community resource centers in the heart of Oakland serving over 1,000 families per year.

From the very beginning, Lotus Bloom has challenged itself to become a place in the community where families can uplift their cultural and linguistic diversity with appreciation and respect of their collective differences and commonalities. Lotus Bloom approaches working alongside families with the goal of maximizing every opportunity for interaction, enrichment, language development, and learning in a culturally competent context. This means that we look at the conditions our families face such as the neighborhood in which they live, their income, experiences of community violence or poverty and access to quality education. We consider these factors in order to cultivate informed and effective resource options from within and outside the community.

Lotus Bloom's Mission is to ensure that every caregiver of young children, particularly those facing financial and other barriers, has a support system connecting them to the health, social and learning opportunities that will ensure their child has a strong start in life.

I really appreciate what Lotus Bloom provided my child. From knowing neither English nor how to interact with teachers and other children, my child now is able to share, play and even help kids and teachers. I can tell everyone likes her and would like to spend time with her. Even if my child has been transferred to preschool, I cannot forget how Lotus Bloom was helping her as a transition. She only cried three days when she started her preschool! I can't imagine what she would be if she did not attend in Lotus Bloom. We love this lovely place and support it as much as we can! LB, Thank you!
