Developed by the Oakland Museum’s Cultural and Ethnic Affairs Guild, the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame was founded in Oakland, California, to support and promote African American filmmakers. Its focus included identifying, preserving, and honoring early African American filmmakers who operated in front and behind the camera. The Hall of Fame recognizes the contributions of long-forgotten or unknown artists who deserve recognition. The Oscar Micheaux Award was a yearly ceremony where recipients were inducted into the Hall of Fame at an event held at the Paramount Theater from 1974 – 1993. Over the years, it evolved into an independent educational and cultural institution that hosted lectures, film series, and film competitions. - photos from the AAMLO Photo Collection https://oac.cdlib.org/findaid/ark:/13030/c8kd23bd

Born into slavery in South Carolina, Isaac Flood (pictured on the left) purchased his freedom at age 20 and came to Brooklyn (later renamed Oakland, California) in 1853 during the era of the Gold Rush. He was one of the founders of the Shiloh AME Church in 1858, which later became known as the First AME Church. He was the husband of educator Elizabeth Thorn Scott.
Isaac Flood petitioned the school board in 1871 to allow minority students into public schools after the passage of the 14th and 15th Amendments. Brooklyn opened its doors to minorities in 1872, and Oakland soon followed. Flood died in 1892 and is buried at Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland.
